Texas Running Out of Execution Drug

State officials said Thursday they are again running out of the lethal drug used to operate the nation?s busiest execution chamber.

Texas Department of Criminal Justice spokesman Jason Clark said the state?s remaining supply of pentobarbital expires in September, and officials ?are exploring all options? for an alternative.
?

Prison officials acknowledged last year that if the supply of pentobarbital ran out, they had explored switching to other drugs including propofol ? the powerful anesthetic that contributed to pop star Michael Jackson?s death from cardiac arrest in 2009.

Russia gives Snowden asylum, Obama-Putin summit in doubt

By Timothy Heritage and Steve Holland

MOSCOW/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Russia rejected U.S. pleas and granted American fugitive Edward Snowden a year's asylum on Thursday, letting the former spy agency contractor slip out of a Moscow airport after more than five weeks in limbo while angering the United States and putting in doubt a planned summit between the two nations' presidents.

The United States wanted Russia to send Snowden home to face criminal charges including espionage for disclosing in June secret American internet and telephone surveillance programs. The White House signaled that President Barack Obama may boycott a September summit with President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.

Snowden, whose disclosures triggered an international furor over the reach of U.S. spy operations as part of its counterterrorism efforts, thanked Russia for his temporary asylum and declared that "the law is winning."

Anatoly Kucherena, Snowden's Russian lawyer, said the 30-year-old had found shelter in a private home of American expatriates.

Putin's move aggravated relations with the United States that were already strained by Russian support for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in that country's bloody civil war and a host of other issues.

"We see this as an unfortunate development and we are extremely disappointed by it," White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters in Washington. "We are evaluating the utility of a summit, in light of this and other issues, but I have no announcement today on that.

Other high-level U.S.-Russian talks were also put in doubt.

Discussions planned for next week between U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel and their Russian counterparts are now "up in the air," according to a U.S. official, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Snowden, a former National Security Agency contractor, has avoided the hordes of reporters trying to find him since he landed at Moscow's Sheremetyevo airport from Hong Kong on June 23. He gave them the slip again as he left the transit area where he had been holed up.

State television showed Snowden, wearing a backpack and a blue button-up shirt, getting into a gray car at the airport, driven by a young man in a baseball cap.

"Over the past eight weeks we have seen the Obama administration show no respect for international or domestic law but in the end the law is winning," Snowden, whose first leaks were published two months ago, was quoted as saying by the WikiLeaks anti-secrecy group, which has assisted him.

"I thank the Russian Federation for granting me asylum in accordance with its laws and international obligations."

Grainy images on state television showed Snowden's document, which is similar to a Russian passport, and revealed that he had been granted asylum for a year from July 31.

'MOST WANTED MAN'

"He is the most wanted man on planet Earth," Kucherena told Reuters.

Kucherena said Snowden wanted to rent an apartment and find work in Russia, and had no immediate plans to leave.

Snowden, who had his U.S. passport revoked by Washington, had bided his time in the transit area between the runway and passport control, which Russia considers neutral territory.

"He needs to work. He is not a rich man, and the money that he had, he has of course, spent on food," said Kucherena, who sits on two high-profile Russian government advisory bodies.

"Snowden is an expert, a very high-level expert, and I am receiving letters from companies and citizens who would eagerly give him a job. He will not have any problems," the lawyer said.

Snowden already has been offered a job by Russia's top social networking site.

A pledge not to publish more information that could harm the United States was the condition under which Putin said Snowden could receive safe harbor. "Edward assured me that he is not planning to publish any documents that blacken the American government," Kucherena said.

Snowden was accompanied by Sarah Harrison, a WikiLeaks legal researcher. "We would like to thank the Russian people and all those others who have helped to protect Mr. Snowden. We have won the battle - now the war," WikiLeaks said on Twitter.

"I am so thankful to the Russian nation and President Vladimir Putin," the American's father, Lonnie Snowden, told Russian state television.

Bruce Fein, an attorney for Lonnie Snowden, spoke twice on Thursday with Kucherena. The discussions were about Edward Snowden's safety - "he is fine" - and about arranging a visit to Russia by Snowden's father and his legal team to see his son, a source familiar with the discussions told Reuters.

Lonnie Snowden has not had direct contact with his son yet and "nobody knows where he (Edward) is," the source said.

The visit to Russia could occur in the next three weeks or so, the source said.

U.S. LAWMAKERS INCENSED

Prominent U.S. lawmakers - Republicans and Democrats - condemned Russia's action and urged Obama to take stern retaliatory steps beyond the issue of the September summit.

It is not clear whether Obama might also consider a boycott of the G20 summit in Russia in September, immediately after the planned summit with Putin, or of the Winter Olympics, which Russia will host in the city of Sochi next February.

"Russia has stabbed us in the back, and each day that Mr. Snowden is allowed to roam free is another twist of the knife," said Senator Chuck Schumer, a close Obama ally and fellow Democrat who urged Obama to recommend moving out of Russia the summit of G20 leaders planned for St. Petersburg.

Republican Senators John McCain and Lindsey Graham, already sharp critics of Putin, called Russia's action a disgrace and a deliberate effort to embarrass the United States. They said the United States should retaliate by pushing for completion of all missile-defense programs in Europe and moving for another expansion of NATO to include Russian neighbor Georgia.

Kremlin foreign policy aide Yuri Ushakov played down concerns about the impact on relations with the United States.

"Our president has ... expressed hope many times that this will not affect the character of our relations," he said.

Snowden hopes to avoid the same fate as Bradley Manning, the U.S. Army soldier convicted on Tuesday on criminal charges including espionage and theft related to releasing classified data through WikiLeaks.

Nicaragua, Bolivia and Venezuela have offered Snowden refuge, but there are no direct commercial flights to Latin America from Moscow and he is concerned the United States would intercept any flight he takes.

Snowden also has received a marriage proposal via Twitter from Anna Chapman, the glamorous former agent who was deported to Russia from the United States in a Cold-War style spy swap in 2010.

Putin has said he wants to improve relations with the United States amid differences over the Syrian civil war, his treatment of political opponents and foreign-funded non-governmental organizations. He would have risked looking weak if he had handed Snowden over to the U.S. authorities.

More than half of Russians have a positive opinion of Snowden and 43 percent wanted him to be granted asylum, a poll released by independent research group Levada said this week.

(AP) ? Clint Dempsey is returning to Major League Soccer, ending his six-year spell in English soccer.

The 30-year-old Dempsey played for the New England Revolution from 2004-06 before joining Fulham in 2007. He moved to Tottenham last summer and scored 12 goals in 43 games, but wasn't a regular.

"We have reached agreement with Major League Soccer for the transfer of Clint Dempsey," Spurs said in a statement Saturday. "We wish Clint every success for the future."

A star for the U.S. national team, Dempsey wasn't a regular in Andre Villas-Boas' starting lineup. Even so, his move is somewhat surprising because Tottenham could also lose forward Gareth Bale this offseason to Real Madrid.

One of the most successful Americans to play in England's top league, Dempsey was first sold from the New England Revolution to Fulham in 2007. Dempsey spent five years playing at Craven Cottage where he scored 50 goals in 184 league appearances and became a fan favorite. Last year with Tottenham, Dempsey scored seven goals in 29 Premier League matches, scored three times in two FA Cup matches and had two more goals in 10 other games.

As his stock in Europe rose, so did Dempsey's role on his national team. He's played in eight games in 2013 for the United States and scored five times. His next international appearance for the Americans will be his 100th, and he's served as the U.S. captain most of this year when Landon Donovan was out.

Dempsey came to England as an attacking midfielder but has developed into a potent forward in recent seasons, starting up front for the U.S. too.

CINCINNATI (AP) - A tenured professor at the University of Cincinnati who says he's responsible for securing millions of dollars in federal grants for medical research is suing the school.

Muhammad Ashraf (ASH'-raff) says the university effectively fired him after he rescinded his resignation from the school.

Ashraf wanted to take back his resignation because he says school administrators refused to transfer grants to his next job at a Georgia university.

At a federal court hearing on Friday, Ashraf's attorneys argued that the dean of Cincinnati's medical college didn't have the authority to accept Ashraf's June 5 resignation, and it's invalid.

Attorneys for the university argue that Ashraf properly and unconditionally resigned and only wanted to leave the university because an investigation into academic misconduct was launched against him.

Ashraf denies misconduct.

I want to go back to my old weight before I was put on all these meds that put it on me (Which I am now on a new med that counter acts them on that side effect) which was 110 at 5ft7-slightly underweight but nothing bad or dangerous or anything like that.... I have a ways to go. But I'm a determined girl. As it turns out though I'm ALSO a boredom and depressive eater at the same time. Ugh. My bad habit is WAY too much soda. I drink soda to stop boredom or depressive eating. How do I stop this depressive and boredom eating? Help?

I think you already know the answer, since you said that your habit of drinking soda is bad. That's right, soda is bad. One thing that helps a lot is to stop buying it. Instead, buy plain seltzer water in the large containers if you have to have bubbly liquid. Put a squeeze of lemon or lime or for fancy a few raspberries in the glass, ice, and fill it up with seltzer. yum.
I stop bored and depressive eating with walks, jogs, bike rides (I have a stand that my bike sits on to 'spin' indoors in the hot summer) and by eating a lot of raw vegetables, seeds like pumpkin seeds or sunflower seeds, and always have some protein in the refrigerator to snack on. Hard boiled eggs are cheap and highly nutritious. Hope that helps. :)

It's with some irony that I note that the post below this one was titled exercise.
I think that pretty much covers it.
However to be a little less flippant.

I have faced the same issue.
I tend to sit in front of the TV, and eat because that's what you do when you watch TV, sit on the couch and eat.
I try to keep it to healthier food, such as fruit, nuts, and whole foods.
So far as the soda, I drink a little ginger beer, or lemon lime and bitters - I use cordial mixed with mineral water.
The rest of the time I usually drink filtered water, or plain mineral water.

I've also dabbled with the 5/2 diet, where you eat normally 5 days per week, and eat a reduced diet 2 days.
I've found with this I become more mindful of what I eat, am more aware of when I feel full, and actually start to feel full sooner than I used to, so this in turn reduces how much I eat.

Exercise is also important.
It is a fact that the difference between putting on weight, losing it, or remaining the same, is finding the right balance between the food (energy) you put into your body, and the energy you use.
You cannot lose weight simply by eating less if you are still not burning off the excess energy or fat in your body.
Similarly, if you have a good balanced diet and exercise regularly, and ensure you don't consume more food than your body needs you will not put on weight.

Medications that make you put on weight often do so because they slow your metabolism, reduce your feeling of being full, or increase your appetite.
I know it all sounds simplistic, and in writing it is, but in practice it is not.
I hate every time I look in the mirror, and whilst I see a 41 year old man with a slight "spare tyre", my mind sees a grossly overweight slob.
I also recall being underweight until my mid 20's, and being almost skeletal as a teenager.
There is no cure for the disconnect between our mental body image, and what we actually appear like to others.
There is also no quick fix for keeping in shape.
However the sooner you find a routine you can stick to that works with your other commitments, the sooner you can feel ownership of your health, and both make yourself look and feel better.

There is no substitute for determination and hard work. and no reward worth having that doesn't require these two ingredients.

My sister had a similar problem the last six months when she was in another country, she was depressed and stressed out all the time, and also quite bored, as she didn't have much to do and didn't have as much friends as back here. She ended up binge-eating and gaining a noticeable amount of weight, around 25 pounds, despite her high metabolism. She said binge-eating calmed her down and made her feel good.
She lost the majority of it when I went back though, for several reasons. My company did help make her less depressed and bored, and as I spent a good part of the day with her I could stop her from eating too much. She also stopped herself as she didn't want me to see her eating so much Laughing. And we did things together which stopped the boredom
In general, if you're a depressed or bored eater, what you really need to address in the long term is the underlying cause, you being bored and depressed. I don't have enough knowledge to say something about the second, but for the first one the answer would be, as smudge said, to find something to fill out your day. A hobby, something you want to learn to do, perhaps go out with friends more often if you like such things, anything productive in general would do. Because if you're bored and depressed it's all too easy to fill up that time with something unproductive, which may not make you gain weight but is still a bad use of your time.
In the short term, yes, I guess the sparkling water idea would do. Determination and hard work are useful indeed, but they only go so far. Drinking lots of soda is a symptom, not the cause, and if you spend your willpower on fighting the symptoms you'll be wasting it, when you could be fighting the causes instead.
