BRUSSELS (AP) -Former Spain striker Raul Gonzalez has kicked off an anti-hunger campaign during which many of Europe's top football clubs will raise awareness of the plight in west Africa's Sahel region, where 10 million people need help.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The man destined to be China's next leader won an extraordinary welcome across Washington on Tuesday, a finely scripted opening to one of the world's most important relationships. Trading kind words of cooperation, President Barack Obama and Xi Jinping also spoke directly about human rights and worsening foreign crises.
Everything about the day reflected just how much China and the United States need each other, no matter what their differences, given their economic and military might and global influence. Xi got a lengthy Oval Office audience with Obama, an elaborate reception at the State Department, full military honors at the Pentagon, a gathering with chief business executives and an invitation for dinner at Vice President Joe Biden's house.
At the center of it was a president seeking four more years and the man expected to lead China for the next decade. Xi, whose full name is pronounced shee jeen-ping, currently is China's vice president and is expected succeed Hu Jintao as president in 2013.
"I'm sure the American people welcome you," Obama said.
The president and vice president, though, both sent stern messages to China about showing more responsibility economically, a sign of simmering frustration over currency and trade policies. Obama said China must play by "the same rules of the road" as the world, and Biden warned Xi that cooperation "can only be mutually beneficial if the game is fair."
All the symbolism and protocol were intended to pay dividends in the coming decade and to reciprocate for Biden's warm stay in China last year.
There were no obvious breakthroughs ? Xi is not empowered yet anyway ? but the stature he is set to assume was enough to draw rare attention.
Never before, for example, has the Pentagon heralded a visiting vice president the way Xi was. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta greeted Xi on the steps of the Pentagon's River Entrance, facing the Potomac, as U.S. troops held an honor cordon for Xi. He got a 19-gun salute.
The relationship between the nations is complex. It is strengthened by their joint need for international stability and economic growth, yet tested by currency disputes, China's limits on basic human freedoms, trade imbalances and growing military tensions.
Obama and Xi said they would maintain a relationship based on the traditional diplomatic speak of mutual interests and respect. They kept their focus on a diverse and cooperative agenda, although Obama did push China on human rights and the importance to recognize the "rights of all people."
In a separate setting, Xi later defended his country's rights records over the past 30 years but added: "Of course there's always room for improvement on human rights." His comments at the State Department luncheon were similar to those made by Hu during a state visit to Washington a year ago.
Leaders of foreign policy, academics and the business worlds were invited to see Xi and hear him speak; a string quartet greeted them upon arrival.
For Xi, the itinerary was carefully negotiated to convey high-level significance and minimize the chance of making news or, worse, any gaffe.
Neither he nor Obama took questions.
Outside the gates of the White House, a few hundred protesters marched, waving Tibetan flags and calling for a free Tibet. Underscoring the sensitivity of the rights issues among China's critics, they held signs proclaiming, "Xi Jinping: Tibet will be free." They shouted "Stop lying to the world."
Inside the Oval Office, Obama assured Xi: "It is absolutely vital that we have a strong relationship with China." The visiting leader smiled and looked at ease in his first formal meeting with the U.S. president.
Xi said that his meetings in Washington, to be followed by stops in the Iowa heartland and then California, were aimed not just at better political ties but a deeper friendship with the American people. By the end, he may even take in a Los Angeles Lakers basketball game, said a smiling Obama, a hoops fan himself.
Xi is known for being adept at forming personal connections, particularly in comparison with Hu, who has often appeared stiff and staid around Obama. In comments at the State Department, Xi cited a couple of old proverbs and even a Chinese pop song to make his point about the ever-changing US-China relationship.
This week is essentially one big get-to-know-you tour, from the halls of power to the farmland of Iowa, which he visited as a lower-ranking government official in 1985. He will have access to many power brokers while in Washington, including Cabinet secretaries, leading lawmakers and, most of all, Biden, his host.
"We are not always going to see eye to eye," Biden said as the day began with talks in the Roosevelt Room. "We are not always going to see things exactly the same, but we have very important economic and political concerns that warrant that we work together."
The timing comes as the United States remains in dispute with China on multiple fronts.
Even as Xi was soaking in his welcome, the top U.S. military officer was pressed at a Senate hearing about alleged Chinese computer hacking. Joints Chief of Staff Chairman Martin Dempsey said someone in China was responsible but he declined to blame the Chinese army for targeted electronic break-ins of U.S. government and corporate computer networks.
The United States accuses China of tolerating electronic theft and industrial espionage, but U.S. officials are reluctant to tie those crimes directly the Chinese government.
The U.S. is also deeply at odds with China and Russia for their vetoes of a tough U.N. Security Council resolution this month that called on Syrian President Bashar Assad to step aside. Washington accuses Beijing of protecting rogue regimes such as Syria, where the bloodshed rages daily.
More broadly, China and the U.S. are also increasingly rivals in the Asia-Pacific region, with Washington's traditional alliances competing with China's economic and cultural influence. China sees the U.S. as encouraging skepticism and dissent among neighbors in the region while trying to undermine communist rule by encouraging civil liberties and human rights causes.
On Iran, China shares U.S. alarm about a possible Iranian nuclear bomb but has blocked consideration of the toughest international sanctions, including an international embargo on Iranian oil. China is Iran's largest customer for oil.
White House spokesman Jay Carney assured that Obama privately brings up "all of these issues" of concerns with Xi and other Chinese leaders.

Whether you love to hate this ?holiday? or just love it, it might make you wonder if love is in the air for you. Well, possibly. If you?re an astrology nut like I am, maybe you?ll turn to the stars for an answer.
February is the month of Aquarius. Aquarians are independent and recognized for standing out and making their own paths in life. They are known to hold this natural beauty in the world and, in some cases, to be outright stunning.
As I was I walking from the parking garage one morning to class, there was a flock of seagulls flying madly in the sky. I looked up and saw they were flying together, singing their seagull song. As I continued to watch, there was one that broke away and went in another direction. I was left standing there thinking, first, why did I forget my camera? Second, what an Aquarius seagull, going off on the unbeaten path. Of course, this is a stretch, but animals have astrological signs too!
I don?t know what compels me to follow astrology with such a passion because all I typically hear from people is how all of it is complete nonsense. I guess I can agree with them to some extent but not really. Besides, what?s more beautiful than finding answers in the stars and the rotating planets? Then if anything goes wrong in her schedule or balance, her whole day will be disheveled.
I?m a curious person, and whenever I meet someone, I will naturally start a conversation with, ?Hey, what?s your sign?? I typically would get a quizzical look and then the question, ?Are you trying to pick me up?? followed with a Cheshire cat grin. Nope. I?m just curious.
From only knowing a person?s sign, whether it?s Taurus, Gemini or Aries, I still would not know a lot about that person. In astrology there are many elements?too many to even write about.
First, there?s a moon and rising sign, which houses the planets you were located in when you were born. This is only a quarter of it. There is significantly more and it?s all revealed in your birth chart. (Right? Huge nerd. I read birth charts).
Not to sound incredibly mystical but reading birth charts can reveal much about the person in how he or she handle situations emotionally and physically. In the old relationship I was in, his birth chart and my chart conflicted in many ways. I was too blinded by silly puppy love to notice that the stars and planets actually held validity.

RAMALLAH, West Bank (AP) ? A Gaza-born woman recently sneaked into her native land through a smugglers' tunnel because the legal route was blocked. A car mechanic who settled in the West Bank 15 years ago to raise a family lives in fear of deportation because his ID card says he's originally from Gaza.
They are among thousands of Palestinians who the New York-based Human Rights Watch says have had their lives disrupted by Israeli restrictions on residency in the West Bank and Gaza, territories captured by Israel in the June 1967 Mideast war and sought for a Palestinian state.
In a report issued Sunday, Human Rights Watch called on Israel to lift restrictions on residency, saying they are often arbritrary and violate international and human rights law, including the right to family life.
"The result has been to split families apart, to arbitrarily ban people from moving around and to arbitrarily prevent a large number of people from returning to their own homes," said the report's author, Bill Van Esveld.
Israel handed some 40 percent of the West Bank to Palestinian self-rule in the 1990s and withdrew from Gaza in 2005, but never relinquished the final say over who is a legal resident of these territories. Israel has cited security grounds for retaining the right to block entries.
Israeli government spokesman Mark Regev said Israel has granted residency in the West Bank and Gaza to tens of thousands of Palestinians over the years and accused Human Rights Watch of anti-Israel bias.
He said Israel's policies are subject to review "by a fiercely independent judiciary."
Israel set up the register after a September 1967 census in the West Bank and Gaza, issuing ID cards to nearly 1 million Palestinians. Human Right Watch said at least 270,000 residents were not present during the census, having either fled the war three months earlier or spending time abroad for work or study.
Israel excluded them from the registry and blocked the possibility of return for many, the report said.
A woman known as Umm Basel, born in Gaza in 1967, said her parents fled to Jordan before the census. After life in exile in Egypt and Jordan, neither of which granted her citizenship, she paid smugglers $200 three months ago to sneak her and her son into Gaza through a tunnel. She has since applied to Israel for a Gaza residency permit, but has received no word the request is being processed. She would not give her full name for fear of repercussions.
Egypt shares a border with Gaza and largely limits passage to those with Palestinians with Israeli-approved ID cards.
Israel's policy on residency rights has fluctuated, along with the ebb and flow of the conflict.
Israel has in principle allowed those with ID cards to apply for residency for spouses or children, and over the years, tens of thousands of such requests were granted. However, huge backlogs built up, especially at times of tension, and Israel also stripped tens of thousands of their residency on grounds they had stayed abroad too long, the report said.
In a related issue, Israel has banned virtually all Palestinian travel between the West Bank and Gaza since the outbreak of the Palestinian uprising in 2000. The two territories, on opposite sides of Israel, are considered one entity by the international community.
Israel has cited security grounds, including deadly attacks by Palestinian militants and the violent 2007 takeover of Gaza by the anti-Israel Hamas. Critics say Israel is isolating areas the Palestinians want for their state to weaken their independence bid.

His ID card identifies the 34-year-old as a Gaza resident and Israeli authorities have so far refused to change his registration to the West Bank. If stopped at an Israeli checkpoint, he could face arrest and deportation to Gaza.
Al-Ustaz said he misses his parents and eight siblings. "My sisters have all married, and I haven't seen them. My brother was killed in Gaza during an Israeli incursion in 2006. I didn't go to the funeral," he said.
Human Rights Watch said about 35,000 Gazans who moved to the West Bank remain there without permits, while Israel last year agreed to register 2,800 as West Bank residents.
