President Obama Urges Illinois Lawmakers To Legalize Gay ...

President Obama issued a statement Saturday urging the Illinois General Assembly to legalize gay marriage as state lawmakers prepare to take up the issue this week.

White House spokesman Shin Inouye highlighted the rare nature of the president?s move, telling the Chicago Sun-Times the while the president ?does not weigh in on every measure being considered by state legislatures, he believes in treating everyone fairly and equally, with dignity and respect.? He went on,

?As he has said, his personal view is that it?s wrong to prevent couples who are in loving, committed relationships, and want to marry, from doing so. Were the President still in the Illinois State Legislature, he would support this measure that would treat all Illinois couples equally.?

The act is called the ?Religious Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act,? and is sponsored by Democratic State Senator Heather Steans (D-Chicago) and Democratic State Representative Greg Harris (D-Chicago). They plan to put the measure up for a January vote.

The Sun-Times notes, ?The practical impact of Obama urging his home state to legalize gay marriage is to prod?and give political cover to?reluctant Democrats from conservative suburban and Downstate districts.?

Illinois already has an effective civil union law, but opposition to marriage equality is expected to be strong among the ?Coalition to Protect Children and Marriage,? which includes the Illinois Family Institute, Abstinence and Marriage Partnership, Illinois Citizens for Life PAC, Lake County Right to Life and Concerned Christian Americans.

Clippers beat Jazz 116-114 for 16th straight win

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) ? Chris Paul scored 29 points and the Los Angeles Clippers rallied from a 19-point deficit in the third quarter to beat the Utah Jazz 116-114 on Friday night, stretching their winning streak to 16 games.

Ex-Clipper Randy Foye's 3-pointer at the buzzer was contested by Matt Barnes, but no foul was called. Foye finished with a season-high 28 points for Utah.

Paul scored the Clippers' final seven points, most from the free throw line, as Los Angeles extended the NBA's longest winning streak this season.

The Jazz led 74-55 with 8:08 left in the third on a pair of free throws by Paul Millsap. But the Clippers outscored Utah 29-14 the rest of the quarter to pull to 88-84 going into the fourth.

Paul provided the offense with 13 points on 4-of-6 shooting in the third. He added nine points in the fourth and led six Clippers in double figures. Blake Griffin added 22 points and 13 rebounds, and DeAndre Jordan had 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Al Jefferson added 22 points for Utah. Gordon Hayward had 17 off the bench.

The Jazz were handed their first home loss this season on Dec. 3 when the Clippers beat them 105-104. Utah led by as many as 14 in that one before Paul came on strong down the stretch.

This time, Caron Butler's four-point play tied it at 90 with 9:09 remaining.

The Jazz built another five-point lead thanks to a three-point play by Derrick Favors. Los Angeles went on a 7-0 run to surge ahead 109-106, but Jefferson scored four straight to put Utah up 110-109.

Paul made five of six free throws down the stretch, and his 17-footer with 23 seconds left gave the Clippers a 113-110 lead.

Foye countered with two free throws and Jefferson tied it at 114 from the line after grabbing Paul's lone miss in the fourth and getting fouled.

Jefferson, however, was called for a foul of his own as Paul cut inside on a pick. Paul's free throws sealed it with 3.4 seconds left.

The Jazz certainly made the Clippers work for this one. Utah used a 36-point second quarter to turn a seven-point deficit into a 58-48 halftime lead. Jazz reserves did most of the damage.

Alec Burks and Earl Watson pushed the pace, big men Enes Kanter and Favors established their presence inside and Hayward found ways to score after missing his first few shots.

Kanter's block of Ronny Turiaf ignited the crowd. Hayward's 3-pointer tied it at 34 with 7:04 left in the second and he scored 10 points straight for the Jazz, who forced eight turnovers in the quarter and held the Clippers to 37.5 percent shooting.

Foye, who kept Utah close in the first with a 13-point quarter on 4-of-5 shooting, gave the Jazz their biggest lead of the half, 54-41, with two more free throws.

Los Angeles led by as many as eight points in the first as Griffin hit four of his first five shots.

NOTES: An unidentified Jazz employee was disciplined and had his access to the team Twitter account discontinued after what team officials deemed an inappropriate tweet regarding the firing of Nets coach Avery Johnson and Brooklyn's interest in Phil Jackson. NJ Near Bottom In 2012 Small Business Ranking [AUDIO]

The national Small Business & Entrepreneurship Council (SBE Council) has released its ?U.S. Business Policy Index 2012: Ranking the States on Policy Measures and Costs Impacting Small Business and Entrepreneurship.?

The Index, now in its 17th year, ranks the 50 states according to 46 different policy measures, including a wide array of tax, regulatory and government spending measures. New Jersey ranks 49th. Only California fares worse.

?I do not bear good news,? says Ray Keating, SBE Council?s chief economist and author of the study. ?New Jersey has the second worst score on the Index this year. Only California is worse.?

There are some positives for New Jersey. Our gas tax ranks 3rd best. The Garden State?s crime rate comes in at #8 and our sales tax ranks #10.

Keating explains, ?Of course when you rank as bad as New Jersey does, you?ve got a bunch of negatives.?

Those negatives include, property taxes (49th in the nation), income taxes (47th), capital gains taxes (48th), interest tax rates (47th), corporate income taxes (43rd), utility costs (43rd), state and local government spending (47th) and state and local government debt (45th).

?Quite simply, policy decisions matter when it comes to making business and investment decisions,? says Keating. ?Entrepreneurs and investors understand this fact of economic life. But it?s hit or miss with elected officials. As illustrated by this index, some get it, and some clearly do not.?

SBE Council president and CEO Karen Kerrigan explains, ?With all of the focus on federal policy in recent times, it is important to remember that policies at the state level have a major effect on entrepreneurs and businesses for better or for worse.?

Keating believes that New Jersey is headed in the right direction, but it will be a long haul.

The top five states in this year?s Index are; 1) South Dakota, 2) Nevada, 3) Texas, 4) Wyoming and 5) Florida.

US economy could handle short fall over 'cliff'

(AP) ? The economic threat that's kept many Americans on edge for months is nearing reality ? unless the White House and Republicans cut a budget deal by New Year's Day.

Huge tax increases. Deep cuts in domestic and defense programs. The likelihood of sinking stock prices, reduced consumer spending and corporate layoffs. The risk of a recession within months.

Still, the start of 2013 may turn out to be far less bleak than feared. For one thing, the two sides may strike a short-term agreement before New Year's that postpones spending cuts until spring. President Barack Obama and members of Congress return to Washington Thursday.

Even if New Year's passed with no deal, businesses and consumers would not likely panic as long as some agreement seemed imminent. The $671 billion in tax increases and spending cuts could be retroactively repealed.

And the impact of the tax increases would be felt only gradually. Most people would receive slightly less money in each paycheck.

"The simple conclusion that going off the cliff necessarily means a recession next year is wrong," says Lewis Alexander, an economist at Nomura Securities. "It will ultimately depend on how long the policies are in place."

It's always possible that negotiations between President Obama and Republican congressional leaders will collapse in acrimony. The prospect of permanent tax increases and spending cuts could cause many consumers and businesses to delay spending, hiring or expanding.

Without any agreement at all for months, the fiscal cliff would cause the U.S. economy to shrink 0.5 percent in the first half of 2013 and fall into recession, the Congressional Budget Office estimates.

But most economists expect a deal, if not by New Year's then soon after. Businesses and consumers will likely remain calm as long as negotiators seem to be moving toward an agreement.

"The atmosphere is more important than whether the talks spill" into next year, said Paul Ashworth, an economist at Capital Economics.

Here's why many are optimistic that a brief fall over the cliff wouldn't derail the economic recovery:

? Though the fiscal cliff would boost taxes by $586 billion for all of 2013, the tax hit for most people would be modest at first. The expiration of Social Security and income tax cuts would be spread throughout 2013. For taxpayers with incomes of $40,000 to $65,000, paychecks would shrink an average of about $1,500 next year. That would be a significant bite over the full year, but the initial hit would be just $130 in January, according to the nonpartisan Tax Policy Center.

? About a third of the tax increases wouldn't touch most Americans. Some would hit businesses. Others, such as higher taxes on investment income and estates, and the expiration of middle-income tax credits, wouldn't come due until Americans filed their 2013 taxes in 2014.

? The Internal Revenue Service has delayed any increases in tax withholding that would otherwise kick in. Without a deal, the top income tax rate for single people with taxable income between about $36,000 and $88,000 would rise from 25 percent to 28 percent. But that won't start to reduce Americans' paychecks in early January, even if no deal is reached by then.

? About $85 billion in spending cuts to defense and domestic programs would take weeks or longer to take effect. That means government agencies wouldn't cut jobs right away.

If a short-term agreement is struck, some taxes would probably still go up. These would include a 2 percentage point cut in Social Security taxes that's been in place for two years. Its expiration would cost the typical household about $1,000 a year. With income gains sluggish, that could dampen consumer spending.

A temporary deal that delays some hard decisions could reduce business and consumer confidence. It would also mean:

? Extended unemployment benefits would end for 2 million people. The federal government's program pays for about 32 weeks of extra benefits, on average, on top of the 26 weeks most states provide. Weekly unemployment checks average about $320 nationwide.

? The stock market would probably drop, though maybe not by much. Many Wall Street analysts expect a partial deal of some kind. "There is starting to become a little bit of an acceptance that we fall off the fiscal cliff," said J.J. Kinahan, a strategist for TD Ameritrade.

? The expiration of the Social Security tax cut and the end of emergency unemployment benefits would likely shave 0.7 percentage point off economic growth next year, the CBO estimates. The economy is now growing at about a 2 percent annual pace.

If no deal at all was reached by January and budget talks dragged on, many businesses might put off investment or hiring. That's why most economists say it would be crucial to reach a deal within roughly the first two months of 2013.

In addition, many more people would be affected if something called the alternative minimum tax isn't fixed.

The financially painful AMT was designed to prevent rich people from exploiting loopholes and deductions to avoid any income tax. But the AMT wasn't indexed for inflation, so it has increasingly threatened middle-income taxpayers. Congress has acted each year for a decade to prevent the AMT from hitting many more people.

If it isn't fixed again, roughly 33 million taxpayers, including married couples with income as low as $45,000 ? down from $74,450 in 2011? could face the AMT. Previously, only 5 million taxpayers had to pay it. Taxpayers subject to the AMT must calculate their tax under both the regular system and the AMT and pay the larger amount. Without a fix, a middle-income household would pay an average of $1,231 more, according to the Tax Policy Center.

The IRS has said it assumes Congress and the White House will fix the AMT in a deal to avoid the cliff. If they don't, the IRS will need weeks to reprogram computers and make other adjustments. In the meantime, about 100 million taxpayers couldn't file tax returns early next year because they couldn't determine whether they owe the AMT. Refunds would be delayed.

The gravest scenario would be if the budget talks collapsed and the tax increases and spending cuts appeared to be permanent.

In that case, Macroeconomic Advisors warns that the Dow could plunge up to 2,000 points within days. Businesses would turn gloomier in anticipation of Americans paying higher taxes and spending less.

The economy would shrink at an annual rate of 0.6 percent in the first three months of 2013, estimates Joel Prakken, an economist at Macroeconomic Advisors. That compares with an estimated 1.9 percent growth rate if a deal is reached. CBO forecasts that the unemployment rate would rise to 9.1 percent from the current 7.7 percent.

Last week, Obama and House Speaker John Boehner narrowed their differences on income tax increases and spending cuts. But with the two sides deadlocked, Boehner scheduled a vote on a bill to prevent taxes from rising on those earning less than $1 million a year. Opposition from anti-tax conservatives, and Democrats, forced him to cancel the vote.

The gridlock caused stocks to fall Friday. The Dow Jones industrial average dropped 121 points.

Obama called for a vote on a stripped-down agreement that would raise taxes only on the wealthiest 2 percent of Americans and extend emergency unemployment benefits. Automatic spending cuts would be postponed.

Whatever the outcome, some trends could offset part of the economic damage. The average retail price for gasoline has dropped 15 percent this fall, for example. Lower gas prices give consumers more money to spend elsewhere.

And if the crisis is resolved, as many expect, the boost to business and consumer confidence would encourage more hiring and spending.

"We could end up with a much more robust recovery than anybody's envisioned" if a deal is reached, said David Cote, CEO of Honeywell International.

Landslide warning for South West

A rare landslide and rockfall warning has been issued for south-west England by the British Geological Survey (BGS).

The BGS has concerns about the stability of cliff edges and cliff sides because of the quantity and intensity of the recent heavy rain.

It is worried about people going for Boxing Day walks, and advising extra caution near cliff edges.

Meanwhile, there are weather warnings for rain and flooding in England and icy roads in northern Scotland.

The British Geological Survey (BGS), along with other agencies, feeds information into the Hazard Warning Centre at the Met Office in Exeter.

The South West Coastal Path, which covers most of the Dorset, Devon, Cornwall and Somerset coasts, runs through areas which are potentially at risk.

The Met Office said an area of heavy rain would move across the country during Wednesday. It said that given the continuing saturated state of the ground this may lead to further localised flooding.

There is also a warning of icy roads for the Shetland Isles, the Orkney Isles and north-eastern parts of Scotland.

Icy stretches are expected to form overnight, especially on surfaces where showers have washed off salt treatments. The Met Office said this could lead to difficult driving conditions.

'Doctor Who' stamps to honor all 11 Doctors

Good news, fans of the legendary sci-fi show "Doctor Who"! The 11 actors who've played the Doctor will now be on stamps! And, bad news! They won't be sold in the U.S., just in the U.K.! (Though Stateside fans and collectors will certainly buy them anyway.)

"It's 50 years since a strange old man stepped out of a Police Box in a scrapyard down Totter's Lane, and the most beloved and exciting television series in the universe began," reads?the Royal Mail's website about the stamps, which will be available in March.

There's a stamp depicting each one of the 11 actors who've played the mysterious lead character, with the first two stamps, showing William Hartnell and Patrick Troughton, in black-and-white. Curly-haired Tom Baker is perhaps the most associated with the role, since he played it the longest, from 1974 to 1981. His stamp appears to show just a hint of the famous long scarf he wore, which later became a major part of many a fan's Halloween repertoire.

The Doctors will all be first-class British postage stamps, but four villains from the show -- the?Daleks, the Ood, the Weeping Angels and the Cybermen -- will also be honored with second-class stamps. The villain stamps will be sold on a sheet also including a first-class stamp featuring the TARDIS, the Doctor's time machine.

The BBC show originally ran from 1963 to 1989 and was brought back in 2005. Matt Smith, the current star, took over the role in 2010.

The stamps mark the show's 50th anniversary in 2013. The show's head writer, Stephen Moffat, told the BBC that "tremendous surprises" were in store for the program's landmark year, but also warned he wouldn't be giving anything away, saying "They wouldn't be surprises if I accidentally said them now, would they?"?

(AP) ? Syrian rebels fully captured a northern town near the Turkish border on Tuesday after weeks of siege and heavy fighting, activists said.

The takeover of Harem, a town of 20,000 in northern Idlib province, was the latest in a string of recent rebel successes that include the capture of wide areas along the border with Turkey. Most of those areas have been in northern Aleppo province, where anti-government forces have captured at least three large military bases.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the rebels captured Harem in the early hours of Tuesday. Mohammed Kanaan, an Idlib-based activist, said the last post to be taken was the historic citadel, which overlooked the town. The army had turned the citadel into a military post.

"Harem is fully liberated now," Kanaan he said via Skype. He added that as the rebels pounded army posts and checkpoints in Harem, the troops withdrew to the citadel that later fell in the hands of rebels.

Rami-Abdul-Rahman, who heads to Observatory, said nearly 30 soldiers and pro-government gunmen surrendered late Monday. He added that rebels set free all gunmen at the age of 16 or less and referred others to local tribunals.

"Harem was very important because it is one of the towns that was loyal to the regime," Abdul-Rahman said by telephone about the town that is nearly a mile from the Turkish border.

In his traditional Christmas address, Pope Benedict XVI decried the slaughter of the "defenseless" in Syria, where anti-regime activists estimate more than 40,000 have died in fighting since the uprising began in March 2011.

The pope encouraged Arab spring nations, where long-serving dictators were forced to step down.

In Aleppo province, which neighbors Idlib, local activist Mohammed Saeed said rebels attacked a military base in the town of Mannagh near the border with Turkey. He said it is one of four air bases in the province.

Regime forces have been using helicopters to carry supplies to besieged areas and to attack rebel positions.

The regime has had increasing difficulty sending supplies by land to Aleppo province after rebels captured in October the strategic town Maaret al-Numan. The town is on the highway that links Damascus with Aleppo, Syria's largest city and commercial center and a major battleground in the civil war since July.

"Airplanes and helicopters are the only way to send supplies since the Free Syrian Army controls the land," Saeed said. He added that rebels are also laying a siege to Aleppo's international airport known as Nairab and threatening to shoot down military or civilians planes using it.

In the Damascus suburb of Jaramana, opposition gunmen ambushed the head of military intelligence in the area and seriously wounded him. He later died of his wounds, the Observatory said.

Computers are ubiquitous in modern life. They offer us portals to information and entertainment, and they handle the complex tasks needed to keep many facets of modern society running smoothly. Chances are, there is not a single person in Ars? readership whose day-to-day existence doesn?t rely on computers in one manner or another. Despite this, very few people know how computers actually do the things that they do. How does one go from what is really nothing more than a collection?a very large collection, mind you?of switches to the things we see powering the modern world?

We?ve arranged a civilization in which most crucial elements profoundly depend on science and technology. We have also arranged things so that almost no one understands science and technology. This is a prescription for disaster. We might get away with it for a while, but sooner or later this combustible mixture of ignorance and power is going to blow up in our faces.

At their base, even though they run much of the world, computers are one thing: stupid. A computer knows nothing. Its brain is little more than a large collection of on/off switches. The fact that you can play video games, browse the Internet, and pump gas at a gas station is thanks to the programs the computers have been given by a human. In this article, we?ll take a look at some of the basic concepts of computer programming: how a person teaches a computer something and how the ideas encapsulated in the program go from something we can understand to something a computer understands.

First, it needs to be said that programming is not some black art, something arcane that only the learned few may ever attempt. It is a method of communication whereby a person tells a computer what, exactly, they want it to do. Computers are picky and stupid, but they will indeed do exactly as they are told. Therefore, each program you write should be like an elegant recipe that anyone?including a computer?can follow. Ideally, each step in a program should be clearly described and, if it is complicated, broken down into smaller steps to remove all doubt about what is to happen.

Programming is about problem solving and thinking in a methodical manner. Like many other disciplines, it requires someone to be able to look at a complex problem and start whittling away at it, solving easier pieces first until the whole thing is tackled. It is this whittling away, this identification of smaller challenges and developing solutions to them, that requires the real talent?and creativity. If you go out to solve a problem, or create a program no one has ever done before, all the book knowledge in the world won?t give you the answer. A creative mind might.

Think of programming like cooking: you learn the basic rules and then you can let your creativity run wild. Few will go on to become the rock stars of the kitchen, but that?s OK. The barrier to entry is not high, and once you are in, you are then limited only by your desire and creativity.
Thinking in base 10

Like many things in the modern world, to understand computer programming and how computers function in general, you have to start with numbers?integers, to be precise. The nineteenth century mathematician Leopold Kronceker is credited with the phrase ?God made the integers; all else is the work of man.? If one is intending to understand computer programming, they must start their journey by looking at simple integers.

In the modern world, we count using what is known as base 10; that is, there are ten distinct digits (0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9), if you want to go higher than those, we prepend a digit representing the number of tens we have. For instance, the number 13 really tells us we have one of the tens, and three of the ones. This structure can go on and on. If we write 586, we are really saying that we have five of the one hundreds, eight of the tens, and six of the ones.

Before looking at how we can translate that to the on and off switches of computers, let?s take a step back and look at our description of a number in a bit more detail. Let?s use 53,897 as our example. Following what we did above, we are really saying that this is five of the ten thousands, three of the one thousands, eight of the hundreds, nine of the tens, and seven of the ones. If we write this out in a more mathematical notation we would arrive at 5*10,000 + 3*1,000 + 8*100 + 9*10 + 7*1. This would evaluate to the number 53,897.

Looking at this summation a little more closely, one might realize the number on the right-hand side of the multiplication (the multiplicand) are all powers of 10; 10,000 is 104, 1,000 is 103, 100 is 102, 10 is 101, and 1 is 100. Re-writing our expression would give 5*104+3*103+8*102+9*101+7*100. In the more general sense, any base-10 number AB,CDE (where, A, B, C, D, and E are some arbitrary digit from 0 through 9) is really saying that we have the following summation: A*104+B*103+C*102+D*101+E*100.
All your base? oh, nevermind

Taking the generalization one step further, we can note that the multiplicand is always 10 to some power when we are working in base 10. That is not a coincidence. If we want to work in any other base number system, we would write any number AB,CDE (where again, A, B, C, D, and E are valid digits in the base we are working with) as the follow summation: A*base4+B*base3+C*base2+D*base1+E*base0.

If we one day encounter an alien civilization that uses base five for everything and they threaten us by stating that they have 342 battle cruisers en route to Earth, we?d know that we would count that as 3*52+4*51+2*50, or 97 ships headed to destroy us. (We?ll just send out the winner of the USS Defiant vs. the Millennium Falcon to take them on, no problem).

Now, there is no reason that we must count in base 10, it is simply convenient for us. Given our ten fingers and ten toes it is only natural that we use a base-10 number system. Past societies have used others, Babylonians, for instance, used a base-60 number system and they had the same symbol represent 1, 60, and 3,600 (a similar problem existed for 61, 3,601, and 3,660).

What does this all have to do with computers? Well, as I mentioned above, computers are nothing more than a big collection of switches. A monstrous set of on/off items?some with only two possible states. If we find that using ten possible states to be logical due to our biology, then it would reason that using base-two numbers would make the most sense for a computer that can only know on or off.

That means the binary number system. The binary number system is base two, and the only numbers available for counting are zero (0) and one (1). Even though you only have 0s and 1s, any number can be represented, as we just showed above. This gives us a way to tell a computer?a big collection of switches?all about numbers. Counting to 10 (base 10) in binary would go as follows: 0 (0), 1 (1), 10 (2), 11 (3), 100 (4), 101 (5), 110 (6), 111 (7), 1000 (8), 1001 (9), 1010 (10).

More generally any binary number can be computed similarly to how we wrote the general sum for base-10 numbers. The number ABCDE in binary would represent the number A*24+B*23+C*22+D*21+E*20. As an example, the number 10011010 in binary would be 1*27+0*26+0*25+1*24+1*23+0*22+1*21+0*20, or 154 in base-10 terminology. (As a nerdy aside, such counting is the origin of the joke ?There are only 10 kinds of people in this world. Those who understand binary and those who do not.?)

Before moving, on a quick aside about terminology. In computer parlance, a single 0 or 1 (a single on/off value) is termed a ?bit.? When you group eight bits together, you get a byte (four bits is called a nybble, but you won?t see that around much anymore). Therefore, if you have a 1GB drive, that means you have 1024*1024*1024 bytes of information, or 8*1024*1024*1024 individual on/off storage spots to which information can be written. When someone in the computer world says something is 16-bit or 32-bit or 64-bit, they are talking about how many bits are available, by default, for representing an integer (or memory address location) on that computer.
Early days

With a method to represent numbers, it became possible to use these collections of switches to do things with those numbers. Even with all the innovations in CPU design and technology that the past 50+ years have brought, at the heart of things, there are only a handful of things that a CPU can do with those numbers: simple arithmetic and logical operations. Just as importantly, it can also move bits/bytes around in memory.

Each of those simple operations could be given a numeric code, and a sequence of these operations could then be issued to a computer for it to execute?this sequence is termed a program. In the beginning, developing a program quite literally involved a programmer sitting in front of a large board of switches, setting some to up (on/1) and some to down (off/0) one at a time, thereby entering the computation sequence into the computer directly. Once all the operations in the sequence have been entered, the program could then be executed.

After entering programs by literally flipping switches became tedious (this didn?t take too long), hardware manufacturers and software developers came up with the concept of assembly, also called machine languages. While the hardware really only knows combinations of ones and zeros, these are difficult to work with. Assembly languages gave a simple name to each possible operation that a given piece of hardware could carry out.

Assembly languages are considered low-level programming languages, in that you are working directly with operations that the hardware can do rather than anything more complex or abstract built on top of these commands. For instance, a simple CPU could understand assembly for adding (ADD) two numbers, subtracting (SUB) two numbers, and moving memory between locations (MOV). The development of assembly allowed programmers to create software that was somewhat removed from the absolute binary nature of the machine and quite a bit easier to understand by reading.

Even though this got programmers one step removed from the numeric codes that actually run the computer, the fact that each different piece of hardware from each manufacturer could have its own, non-overlapping assembly language meant is was still difficult to create complex software that carried out large-scale tasks in a general manner.

It wasn?t until 1956 that John Backus came down from the mountain with a host of punch cards inscribed with ?The FORTRAN Automatic Coding System for the IBM 704? (PDF). FORTRAN (FORmula TRANslator) was the first ever high-level language, a language in which scientists and engineers could interact with a computer without needing to know the down and dirty specifics of the commands the machine actually supported.

(AP) ? The late Sen. Daniel Inouye was remembered Sunday as an American hero whose legacy as a war veteran and longtime senator would be felt across Hawaii for years to come.

The memorial service at Honolulu's National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific was attended by more than 1,000 people, including President Barack Obama, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, Hawaii's congressional delegation and a number of other senators, cabinet secretaries and other dignitaries.

"Daniel was the best senator among us all," Reid told those assembled. "Whenever we needed a noble man to lean on, we turned to Sen. Dan Inouye. He was fearless."

The cemetery is the final resting place to thousands of World War II veterans. More than 400 members of the storied Japanese-American 442nd Regimental Combat Team ? of which Inouye was a part ? are buried at the site.

Several 442nd veterans attended the Sunday morning service, the latest in a number of tributes and honors for Inouye following the 88-year-old's Dec. 17 death from respiratory complications.

A 19-gun cannon salute was fired as Inouye's coffin arrived at the cemetery. The service also featured a flyover by F-22 military jets and the playing of "Taps" by Democratic Sen. Jon Tester of Montana.

Inouye's widow, who was seated with the president and first lady Michelle Obama in the front row, dabbed her eyes as a pipes and drums band played "Danny Boy."

Inouye was the first Japanese-American elected to both houses of Congress and the second-longest serving senator in U.S. history.

He was a high school senior in Honolulu on Dec. 7, 1941, when he watched dozens of Japanese planes fly toward Pearl Harbor and other Oahu military bases to begin a bombing that changed the course of world events.

He volunteered for a special U.S. Army unit of Japanese-Americans and lost his right arm in a battle with Germans in Italy. That scratched his dream of becoming a surgeon and he went to law school and into politics instead.

"He was a shining star of the greatest generation," fellow Hawaii Democratic Sen. Daniel Akaka said at the service.

Akaka also highlighted Inouye's role in steering federal money to build roads, schools and housing in Hawaii over the decades, from the beginning of statehood.

"Dan Inouye is Hawaii and Hawaii is Dan Inouye," Akaka said.

Several services have already been held in Washington and in Hawaii for Inouye. He lay in state at both the U.S. Capitol Rotunda on Thursday and the Hawaii state Capitol on Saturday.

Obama eulogized Inouye during a service at Washington's National Cathedral on Friday, saying that Inouye's presence during the Watergate hearings helped show him what could be possible in his own life.

The president arrived early Saturday in Honolulu for his annual Christmas family vacation. He made a brief visit to the grave of his grandfather, World War II veteran Stanley Dunham, after Sunday's service.

Oldest of zoo gorillas turns 56 in central Ohio

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) ? The first gorilla born in a zoo is turning 56 and celebrating her birthday with some special treats at her central Ohio home.

The Association of Zoos and Aquariums says the female western lowland gorilla named Colo is the oldest gorilla in any zoo. She was born at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium in 1956.

The zoo marked Colo's birthday Saturday with a cake specially prepared for her and other gifts, including her favorite food, tomatoes. The zoo included guests in the fun by having them sing "Happy Birthday."

Colo is a mother of three. Her family tree includes more than two dozen descendants living at zoos across the country.
