The Kremlin-funded English-language network RT, formerly known as Russia Today, announced today that it has agreed to air Mr. King's four-times-weekly online public affairs program "Larry King Now," starting in June. The station will also stage a "mold-breaking" new show, "Politics with Larry King," all to be shown on its US affiliate, RT-America.

According to the RT statement, King will mainly focus on US politics, and King will interview leading political personalities, ranging from officials to critics of American foreign and domestic policies.

"Whether a president or an activist or a rock star was sitting across from him, Larry King never shied away from asking the tough questions, which makes him a terrific fit for our network," RT?s Editor-in-Chief Margarita Simonyan is quoted as saying.

King, who has spent 56 years in broadcast journalism and conducted over 50,000 interviews, is the biggest name yet to join the extremely well-funded RT network, which claims to reach over 630 million viewers worldwide through its various English, Spanish, and Arabic language channels.

"I have always been passionate about government and issues that impact the public, and I?m thrilled at the opportunity to talk politics with some of the most influential people in Washington and around the country," the RT statement quoted King as saying.

Ms. Simonyan refused Wednesday to discuss with journalists the terms of King's RT contract, saying that it's standard practice not to reveal financial details without the agreement of both parties.

Last year the network signed WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange to do a series of political talk shows with major world newsmakers, which included interviews with Hezbollah leader Sayyid Nasrallah, US radical thinker Noam Chomsky, and Ecuadoran President Rafael Correa.

Since it was founded by the Kremlin in 2005, RT has expanded far beyond its original mandate to correct "misconceptions" about Russia around the world and moved to more aggressive "alternative" coverage of politics in the US, Britain, and other Western countries, where it has gained a wide following. The station claims to have 2 million viewers in Britain, and to have become one of the most widely watched foreign stations in several parts of the US, where it is carried by cable networks.

The network's changing focus, from explaining Russia to the world to mainly hosting critical content about the US and other Western countries, is the subject of a recent in-depth profile of RT by British journalist Oliver Bullough. "Deep into his 14th year in power, [President Vladimir Putin] appears to have given up on improving Russia. Instead, he funds RT to persuade everyone else that their own countries are no better," Mr. Bullough concludes.

There is little transparency about the financing of RT, which comes mainly through the Russian federal budget. But some Russian media have reported that RT's annual funding comes to around $300 million, and that last year Mr. Putin personally ordered his government not to slash financing for the station.

King left CNN in 2010 after 25 years of hosting his signature talk show, "Larry King Live." He's since broadcast about 150 episodes of his online program, produced by Ora.TV, which will now be taken up and broadcast 4 times weekly by RT. It's not clear how the all-new RT program "Politics with Larry King" will differ, but most experts believe it will be well-funded and calculated to showcase RT's growing clout on the global media landscape.

"Russia Today [RT] is making a concerted effort to raise its profile, and it's going about it in a pretty smart way," says Nikolai Svanidze, a famous Russian TV anchorman, journalist and historian.

"Larry King may not be a spring chicken, but he's still a famous name who will add luster to RT's content and attract viewers in the West. Of course, we all know that RT has the money to do this," he adds.

(AP) ? The song "Come Together" their rallying cry, performers at a benefit concert for victims of the deadly Boston Marathon bombing had thousands of people cheering for a city that has pulled together to overcome adversity.

Veteran rockers Aerosmith helped close the 5 ? hour Boston Strong Concert on Thursday. After an energetic run through hits, such as "Walk This Way" and "Sweet Emotion," they were joined on stage by 1990s boy band New Kids on the Block and other performers for the Beatles classic.

The Boston Strong Concert had residents jamming to songs from the Dropkick Murphys, Boston and other musical acts and even laughing at a joke about the capture of a bombing suspect.

The concert kicked off with the rock band Boston playing songs including its 1970s hit "More Than a Feeling."

"Tonight, we are all Boston," lead singer Tommy DeCarlo declared to a crowd of thousands of people, including victims and first responders, at the TD Garden.

"Boston got its heart broken ... but if they think they can keep us down, they can 'Dream On,' said frontman Steven Tyler before Aerosmith played their hit by that name.

The Dropkick Murphys, whose rousing rendition of "I'm Shipping Up to Boston" was a crowd favorite, were introduced by former New England Patriots player Joe Andruzzi, who was watching the April 15 marathon when the bombs went off and helped victims at the scene.

"When I looked around that day, the image that's in my mind is seeing more people run to the site than run away," Andruzzi said. "That is truly Boston Strong."

Concertgoer Harry Donovan said Boston residents weren't going to let "any violence, any hatred bring this town down."

"This city took a hit, there's no doubt, but Boston, like a lot of other cities, is resilient," said Donovan, of nearby Wellesley.

Bombing victim Jeff Bauman, who lost his legs in one of the blasts and was led from the scene in a wheelchair, also attended and smiled on a massive television screen.

As the members of NKOTB took the stage to perform, member Joey McIntyre, who had finished running in the marathon 10 minutes before the bombs went off, choked up.

"I happened to be on a bench in Copley Plaza, Copley Square," McIntyre said, "but I don't care where you were that day, because this happened to all of us."

Surprise guests Boyz II Men joined NKOTB on stage for "One Sweet Day" in tribute to those who lost their lives in the attack.

Other acts taking part in the benefit show included country singer Jason Aldean and comedian Steven Wright. James Taylor performed "Sweet Baby James" with Carole King on piano.

More than once, the words "Boston Strong" were met with cheers and fist pumps from the energetic crowd.

"I love that phrase," enthused Boston comic Lenny Clarke, whose cathartic set featured a foul-mouthed, one-man reenactment of the capture of bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. "You know what I don't love? 'Shelter in place.'"

Boston area residents were locked down, told to shelter in place, a few days after the bombing while authorities searched for Tsarnaev, who was found hiding in a boat in a backyard in suburban Watertown. Tsarnaev's older brother, Tamerlan Tsarnaev, had died after a shootout with police.

The suspects, ethnic Chechens from Russia, are accused of setting off two pressure cooker bombs packed with shrapnel near the marathon's finish line, killing three people and injuring more than 260 others. Their mother has insisted they are innocent.

Concert proceeds will go to One Fund Boston, the compensation fund established by Gov. Deval Patrick and Mayor Thomas Menino to help bombing victims.

The amount of money raised by the concert won't be available until next week, a spokesman for the event's producer said. Ticket prices for the sold-out show ranged from $35 to close to $300.

It was a night of joy, tears, laughter and standing ovations, but co-organizer and NKOTB member Donnie Wahlberg said the artists on stage were not the true stars.

"You deserve the credit," the Dorchester native told the crowd. "I think we've shown the world in the last few months what many in Boston have already known, that we are not just one of the greatest cities in the world, we are one of the greatest families in the world."

Facebook shares jump as brokers say usage concerns overblown

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Shares of Facebook Inc jumped 5.6 percent on Thursday after two investment brokerages upgraded their recommendations, arguing that concerns over the waning engagement of younger users were overblown.

Still, the share price of the world's largest social network is at a six-month low, partly due to fears that young users were beginning to cool their activities on Facebook, in favor of newer services like Twitter and the increasingly popular photo messaging application, SnapChat.

In midday trading, shares were up at $24.63.

Jefferies & Co and BMO Capital upgraded the stock to buy and outperform, respectively. Their analysts argued that user growth may have leveled off as Facebook gained scale, but it remained the most popular social media service and upcoming products - such as higher-margin video ads - may accelerate revenue growth.

"While MAU's (monthly active users) have somewhat plateaued due to the law of large numbers, we think there is room for financial upside as we expect marketers will find Facebook's 1B+ users irresistible despite any incremental changes in teen usage habits," Jefferies analyst Brian Pitz wrote in a research note.

Unique among Earth's creatures, turtles are the only animals to form a shell on the outside of their bodies through a fusion of modified ribs, vertebrae and shoulder girdle bones. The turtle shell is a unique modification, and how and when it originated has fascinated and confounded biologists for more than two centuries. A Smithsonian scientist and colleagues recently discovered that the beginnings of the turtle shell started 40 million years earlier than previously thought. The team's research is published in the May 30 issue of Current Biology.

The oldest known fossil turtle dated back about 210 million years, but it had an already fully formed shell, giving no clues to early shell evolution. Then a clue came in 2008 when the 220 million-year-old fossil remains of an early turtle species, Odontochelys semitestacea, were discovered in China. It had a fully developed plastron (the belly portion of a turtle's shell), but only a partial carapace made up of distinctively broadened ribs and vertebrae on its back. With this knowledge the scientists turned to newly discovered specimens of Eunotosaurus africanus, a South African species 40 million years older than O. semitestacea that also had distinctively broadened ribs. Their detailed study of Eunotosaurus indicated it uniquely shared many features only found in turtles, such as no intercostal muscles that run in between the ribs, paired belly ribs and a specialized mode of rib development, which indicates that Eunotosaurus represents one of the first species to form the evolutionary branch of turtles.

"Eunotosaurus neatly fills an approximately 30-55-million year gap in the turtle fossil record," said Tyler Lyson, a Peter Buck Postdoctoral Fellow at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History. "There are several anatomical and developmental features that indicate Eunotosaurus is an early representative of the turtle lineage; however, its morphology is intermediate between the specialized shell found in modern turtles and primitive features found in other vertebrates. As such, Eunotosaurus helps bridge the morphological gap between turtles and other reptiles."

Ribs in most other animals protect internal organs and help ventilate the lungs to assist breathing. Because the ribs of turtles have been modified to form the shell, they have also had to modify the way they breathe with specialized muscles. This presents the team with their next challenge. They plan to examine the novel respiratory system in turtles and see how it evolved in conjunction with the evolution of the turtle's shell.

News Flash: PPC Is Inbound Marketing - WordStream

The industry is all a-buzz today with Rand Fishkin?s announcement that SEOmoz is relaunching and rebranding as simply Moz. They are distancing themselves from their history as an SEO company and positioning themselves as a provider of more general marketing tools, with a focus on ?inbound marketing,? the phrase that local Boston company HubSpot and others made (relatively) famous.

I couldn?t help but notice that Rand?s blog post explaining the change included a revision of a diagram he had previously used when discussing inbound marketing. Here?s the new diagram, which distinguishes between inbound marketing and ?interruption marketing?:

What is Inbound Marketing?

And here?s the old diagram, from Rand?s March 2011 blog post:

Inbound Marketing vs. Outbound Marketing

Notice anything missing? That?s right, brainiacs, PPC is mysteriously missing! In the new diagram, PPC is right next to SEO, at the top of the list - where I think it belongs! So what changed?

What (TF) Is Inbound Marketing, Anyway?

Earlier this year, there was a long thread at Inbound.org, started by our own Victor Pan, who petitioned for a PPC category on the site. Tad Chef responded by saying that ?buying ads is outbound?:

Inbound Marketing Definition

Ian Howells echoed this idea, saying: ?Not that I hate on paid search, but erm? the site is called inbound.org. PPC is paid media, which is the polar opposite.?

Martin McDonald then followed up on the topic in a post called ?WTF is Inbound Marketing, Anyway?? at his blog, which drew another long chain of comments. Martin disagreed with both Tad and Ian:

Now frankly, I?m in disagreement with both of the above. PPC is absolutely a part of inbound marketing by my standards.?My definition of inbound revolves around being somewhere with the answer when someone is looking for it, NOT sticking an advert for a product or service in front of their faces. That absolutely includes PPC!

This sparked another thread at Inbound.org, with people continuing to debate whether PPC, being a form of paid media, qualifies as inbound marketing.

Is PPC included in Inbound Marketing?

The answer, as Ed Fry points out, really depends on how you define inbound marketing. Is it about cost of distribution, or context?

Free vs. Paid, Interruption vs. Flow

Some people in the web marketing space have suggested that PPC shouldn?t be included in ?inbound marketing? because you have to pay for placement. But this doesn?t make any sense.

The whole point of introducing a term like ?inbound marketing? is to create a more nuanced distinction than just ?free marketing? and ?paid marketing.? Any marketer who manages a budget knows that no form of marketing is truly ?free.? HubSpot, one of the first proponents of inbound marketing, sells a product that helps you do it ? how is that free? They know that if they called what they?re selling ? a platform for blogging and SEO ? ?free marketing,? it would? be a contradiction in terms. Of course, you can do inbound marketing without HubSpot (duh), but you?re either going to be paying someone or a team of people to do it (a blogger, a social media manager, an SEO specialist, etc.) or you?re going to be doing it yourself, as the business owner, and any time you spend on inbound marketing is time you can?t spend on other business activities, so all those activities have a cost. That?s why ?free marketing? doesn?t cut it.

It makes much more sense to think of ?inbound marketing? as the opposite of ?outbound marketing,? or ?interruption marketing,? than as the opposite of ?free marketing? (which doesn?t exist). By this definition, inbound marketing is any kind of marketing that reaches customers when they go looking for something to buy.

For example: if you own a local pizza joint and you go around stick fliers and menus under people?s windshield wipers and rubber-banding them to their doorknobs all the time, that?s outbound or interruption marketing, because you?re coming to them and getting in their face, even though you have no idea whether they want pizza or even like pizza.

But if someone in your area searches for ?pizza? on their mobile phone at 5 pm, and they get an organic local listing or a mobile PPC ad from your businesses, that?s contextual. Neither option is interrupting the flow of what they?re doing. Either way, you?re giving them information they were already looking for. Because PPC, like SEO, is contextual and query-triggered, it?s inbound marketing. Clearly, Rand and the Moz team realized this sometime in the past couple of years, and that?s part of why they?re changing their position.

Is Paid Media Sustainable?

Hubspot, who helped create and popularize the inbound marketing buzzword, has long argued that PPC is a marketing addiction. At the 2012 HubSpot user conference in Boston, Mark Roberge, a senior HubSpot executive, gave a talk where he claimed that paid search is not sustainable. Here?s a photo from that event!

is Paid Search Considered Inbound Marketing?

I won?t reiterate the irony of HubSpot being a paid product. But I will repeat that all media is paid media. SEO requires tremendous effort. Thousands of new websites are launched every day, but the first page of the search results isn?t getting any bigger. In fact, if we look at the trends in mobile search, if anything, the SERP is getting smaller! That means the competition to get on the first page of Google is getting exponentially greater all the time.

And of course Hubspot knows this. After all, we?ve even done joint webinars together on how to leverage PPC. And they spend 10?s of thousands of dollars per month on PPC advertising to generate leads in a cost effective and scalable way, according to tools like SpyFu and SEMRush:

Hubspot says Paid Search isn't inbound marketing and should be avoided yet they do a lot of paid search

Ian Lurie pointed out recently, SEO is a zero-sum game. There?s only room for 10 organic listings on the first page (if you?re lucky). And if someone else takes those spots, that means you can?t! If you think it?s going to be easy to compete with bigger businesses who have been doing it longer, you?re crazy. And you?re even crazier if you think SEO is free.

I?m glad that more marketers including Rand Fishkin and I realize that PPC is inbound marketing, it is sustainable, and it does work.

Are you on board yet? And if not, why not?

Hader: Stefon probably won't be on 'SNL' again

TV

Eight years, countless strangely named nightclubs and a "human roomba" later, Bill Hader sayshe doesn't think Stefon will be back any time soon. The "Saturday Night Live" actor announced earlier this month that the season 38 finale of 'SNL' would be his laston the show, and he sat down with Willie Geist and Megan Colarossi to talk about Hader's fan-favorite character.

Willie: So how does it feel to be done with 'SNL'?

Bill: I feel good. It was more like my wife and I decided we were moving to California because we were flying out there a lot. So it was like, "Can I still do 'SNL' and live in LA?" and it wasn?t going to work out.

Willie: Was there any trepidation about stepping away from 'SNL'?

Bill: No, because to me it was like "I did SNL." I mean, getting "SNL" was pretty amazing so just to be able to have an eight-year career there and be really happy with everything I did, it was pretty big.

Megan: I heard there's an interesting story about you and Andy Samberg auditioning at the same time?

Bill: We both were auditioning at the same time and he was the guy next to me and he had a backpack full of props, not like Carrot Top-style, but people bring props, a lot of people do that. But I looked over and I was going, "I didn?t bring anything, I'm an idiot. Why didn't I think to bring any props or anything?" And he said he was looking at me and thinking, "Oh, he didn't bring any props, why did I?" We were both just wrecks.

Watch: Bill Hader's best celeb impressions on SNL

Willie: The big question everyone wants to know, will we ever see Stefon again?

Bill: That might have been it.

Willie: No Stefon movie?

Bill: No, probably not. Lorne (Michaels) talked about (a movie), and me and John Mulaney who I write that with, we talked about it and said, no I don?t really think there?s a movie there. I mean, it barely worked as a sketch! We couldn?t do it as a sketch, that?s why we put it on "(Weekend) Update." I was like, "Unless I break during the movie, I don?t think people are gonna watch."

Willie: The hands coming to the face, did that come from you laughing?

Bill: No, that was a part of the character, him being nervous. And then it helped when (John Mulaney) would start changing the cue cards and I'd laugh. The cue-card changing, it was really only two or three times where they?d change it and it?d be something completely different that I didn?t know about. Most of the time when I would start laughing was something that we wrote that week and I still couldn?t keep it together, like the Human Roomba joke. But sometimes as I?m walking out, John Mulaney would say, "Oh I changed the club promoter to Gay Liotta. Have fun!"

Willie: It seems like there was a competition to see who could come up with the most obscure reference.

Bill: We?d try to take the Stefon pitches to the amazing writing table at "SNL" and we?d say, "OK, what club should this take place in?" and people would say really funny stuff, but then John would go, "A haunted diaper" and I?d agree and say, "Yeah, a haunted diaper." And eventually the writers just said, "Yeah, go away, we can't." And we don?t really laugh that much while we?re writing it. It?s just kind of sitting there, long stretches of silence. Most of the time it was just slamming your head against the wall. I think with that writers' room thing, it was hard to give notes on Stefon as far as what to cut and what not to cut because it was like, "I don?t know what any of this means."

Samsung Desktop Dock with the Galaxy S4

Samsung Desktop Dock

One of our favorite features of the Samsung Galaxy S4 is that it's essentially the same size as its predecessor, and so a number of accessories released for the Galaxy S3 work with the newer version as well.

That brings us to what you see here -- the Samsung Multimedia Desktop Dock. It's a pretty basic deal -- plop your Galaxy S4 into it and it'll automatically switch to Desktop mode. Plug in with a microUSB cable and you'll charge the phone at the same time. And use the optional 3.5mm line out to play music while the phone's docked.

This thing's pretty portable as well, with the dock section flipping down into itself for easy travel. And perhaps most important, you can get it fairly cheap since technically it's "last year's" dock.

We've got a handful of pics after the break. Give 'em a gander.

Just How Fragile Are America’s Bridges?

Following last week's I-5 bridge collapse near Mount Vernon, Wash., the AP reported that the bridge was not structurally deficient but was functionally obsolete, and listed the bridge's ?sufficiency rating," at 47 out of 100. But what does any of that bridge jargon mean to anyone who isn't a civil engineer?

U.S. infrastructure is crumbling. But aside from the occasional report card issued by the American Society of Civil Engineers, which gives letter grades in categories such as bridges and drinking water based on the wide-ranging assessments of its members, there's no unified measurement for the status of different types of infrastructures. So when a bridge collapses, we're presented with terms fit for bridge inspectors.

Structural Deficiency

First, there's structural deficiency, a designation that can be based on any number of factors. America is awash in structurally deficient bridges. The most famous example in recent memory was the old I-35W bridge in Minneapolis that spanned the Mississippi River. It collapsed in 2007, killing 13 and injuring 145. But the Minnesota bridge was just one of 75,000 such structurally deficient bridges in the country at that time, and that I-35W bridge had carried that designation for 17 years before its failure. It had been slated for replacement in 2020, but the sheer number of structurally deficient bridges (the U.S. has 66,749, as of last year) meant it was simply part of a staggering nationwide backlog.

Functional Obsolescence

The I-5 bridge was not structurally deficient. But it was functionally obsolete, another relatively common designation that means it was effectively over the hill. The bridge was built in 1955, when traffic was lighter and so were the loads borne by trucks.

Functional obsolescence is about modern usage exceeding what the original design intended. It's not about specific cracks, wear, or other structural abuse. Bridges can be both functionally obsolete and structurally deficient. The two designations aren't mutually exclusive, but structural deficiency is more alarming.

Sufficiency Ratings

These are determined by a complex formula taking into account everything from clearance above and below the bridge deck to its ?essentiality" to the public. Sufficiency ratings tend to be based on some of the same factors as designations of structural deficiency and functional obsolescence. But because sufficiency ratings also include nonstructural aspects, the rating serves a different purpose?it attempts to prioritize the repair or replacement of that bridge.

With a sufficiency rating of 47 of 100, the I-5 bridge was a project that desperately needed addressing?not because it was doomed to fail, necessarily, but because it was grossly inadequate. By comparison, the I-35W bridge that collapsed in Minnesota was rated at 50. (Sufficiency ratings are public information, but, perhaps not surprinsingly, the information isn't easy to access. The best source we've see is Nationalbridges.com.)

The Rest of the Story

Still, these designations and ratings don't tell the full story of any given bridge. The I-35W bridge, for example, was a flawed design from the start. Its structure was considered fracture-critical, meaning that a large enough failure would lead not to a staged collapse, but to a systemic shattering. That seemed to be the case in 2007, when construction equipment overloaded its weakened deck during rush hour. When NTSB investigators analyzed the wreckage, however, they found that the I-35W bridge's design was even worse than originally thought, with its too-small gusset plates creating gaps and structural weaknesses far below the observable surface (which was already in a state of cracked disarray, though seemingly for other reasons).

So just because a bridge has a score in the range of these two bridges doesn't mean it's going to fail. Even landmark spans are scary if you look at the statistics: While portions of the Brooklyn Bridge are currently designated as either structurally deficient or functionally obsolete, local officials continue to assure the drivers of the 105,000 cars that cross it daily that it's nowhere near failure. The statistics mean what they mean, but aren't always harbingers of disaster.

All of this is why, when disaster strikes, we're left with the coldest comfort of all: structurally deficient and functionally obsolete bridges are everywhere. Our 84,748 functionally obsolete bridges are a problem and deserve attention. But there are also 66,749 structurally deficient bridges in active daily use in the U.S., representing 11 percent of all bridges, including some 7980 fracture-critical ones.

Those numbers are dropping, but slowly. But however perplexing or misleading the lexicon of civil engineering might be, make no mistake?American infrastructure remains in crisis.

NBC?s Brian Williams Trumpets Bob Dole?s Criticism of GOP as Too Conservative

Once again demonstrating the NBC Nightly News is the broadcast arm of MSNBC, anchor Brian Williams ? matching what has animated MSNBC hosts ? devoted a segment to former Senator Bob Dole railing against the modern Republican Party; ie: conservatives.

With ?Fighting Words? on screen, Williams on Tuesday night highlighted comments neither the ABC nor CBS evening newscasts found newsworthy, how the 89-year-old ?made it clear in a rare interview this weekend the GOP of his day is unrecognizable. He thinks they should pause, rebuild and start over.?

After a clip of Dole from Fox News Sunday, Williams touted how Dole agreed with a media theme: ?Dole said Reagan would not have made it in the current-era GOP.? Williams also relayed that ?he considers himself a mainstream conservative Republican.?

Bob Dole was many things and earned respect for a long and powerful career despite a serious war injury, but he was never a conservative.
?
(Dole?s take on Reagan was prompted by interviewer Chris Wallace who had asked if Reagan could ?make it in today?s Republican Party??)

Williams, naturally, ignored Dole?s downbeat assessment of President Barack Obama: ?I think as a President, he lacks communication skills with his own party let alone the Republican Party. And he?s on the road too much.?

From the Tuesday, May 28 NBC Nightly News:

BRIAN WILLIAMS: We heard from Bob Dole this weekend, now 89 years old. The former Senate Leader, Kansas Senator, decorated World War II veteran and presidential candidate, has been largely out of public view at times fighting ill health, but his fighting spirit is clearly undiminished. He made it clear in a rare interview this weekend the GOP of his day is unrecognizable. He thinks they should pause, rebuild and start over.

BOB DOLE, FOX NEWS SUNDAY: I think they ought to put a sign on the national committee doors: ?Closed for repairs until New Year?s Day next year.? And spend that time going over ideas and positive agendas.

WILLIAMS: Dole said Reagan would not have made it in the current-era GOP and he considers himself a mainstream conservative Republican.

Former UC Riverside student builds replica human colon and feeds it three times per day to understand impact bacteria has on groundwater

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (http://www.ucr.edu) To better understand how bacteria impact the environment a former University of California, Riverside graduate student spent nearly a year building a system that replicates a human colon, septic tank and groundwater and "fed" the colon three times a day during weeklong experiments to simulate human eating.

Ian Marcus, who recently earned his Ph.D. from the UC Riverside Bourns College of Engineering, said discussion of the research often left people a bit perplexed.

"People would give a kind-of-interested-but-definitely-don't-talk-about-it-during-dinner look because we're literally dealing with crap," Marcus said. "It has got the smell. It has got everything."

The idea for the project came after Marcus noticed that scientists typically study bacteria in an isolated environment under ideal growing conditions. That presents a problem because bacteria typically proliferate in microbial communities with other microorganisms such as archaea, fungi and protozoa.

Marcus set out to solve that problem by creating a simulated environment where the life cycle of bacteria (he used a pathogenic strain of E. coli in these experiments) and the microbial communities they live in can be studied from the human colon to water treatment to groundwater.

In the past, researchers have simulated the gut of humans and synthetic aquatic environments, but no one had combined the two, as far as Marcus can tell.

By comparing his finding with those of researchers who worked with bacteria in an isolated environment, Marcus found that the E. coli strain in the microbial community may be less mobile in aquatic environments and more prone to biofilm that than the isolated strain.

This means that the E. coli would linger longer in the environment, since biofilm provides a refuge for all the microorganisms within it. When the biofilm matures it sends out bacteria to colonize another surface thus the bacteria could survive in the environment for longer periods of time.

"This means that pathogens could potentially linger longer and over a long period of time travel greater distances in the groundwater," Marcus said.

Marcus said his research shows you should study microorganisms as close to possible in their natural habitats.

Marcus, who worked in the lab of Sharon Walker, an associate professor of chemical and environmental engineering, had his findings published in a paper called "Linking Microbial Community Structure to Function in Representative Simulated Systems" in the journal Applied Environmental Microbiology. Co-authors were Walker, and Hailey A. Wilder and Shanin J. Quazi, both former students in Walker's lab.

"It is a pleasure to work with a student who can think outside of the box and bring in fresh ideas on how we can approach our research," Walker said. "Ian's work has provided critical new insight into how microbial communities behave in wastewater treatment and contribute to biological contamination of water, which really changes the paradigm of how we do research and manage our water resources."

Why I started writing online | Beyond Life's Challenges

I have had an online writing presence ever since I was encouraged by an acquaintance and fellow military veteran to sign up with Associated Content with a piece I wrote on Veterans? Day nearly five years ago called ?Thank You for Your Service: My Promise to All Veterans.?? Associated Content was bought out and is now called the Yahoo! Contributor Network and I?ve seen a lot of changes in the site.

I started writing online to give myself a ?voice.?

Throughout my life, I?ve been accused of talking too much about things that should not be talked about and being too confrontational. Most saw this as ?attitude? when it was actually my personality. Consequently, I took? a lot of criticism.

?You talk too much,? ?You have diarrhea of the mouth,? ?Why must you always have an argument?? and ?Must you always ask ?why??? were comments and questions I?ve heard many times over the last 50+ years from people who simply wanted to change me.

Quiet me. Control me. Beat me verbally into submission.

I had rarely felt that others listened to what was beneath the words. I was careful not to question certain people, as ?Why?? was not well-received in my family, in the military, nor in several of the companies for which I?ve worked.

But I could not help myself. It is part of who I am at the very core.

Curious. Challenging. Wanting to learn and understand.

It was not until much later in my life that I learned that most of the time the people who were most uncomfortable with me were people who were unsure of themselves.? They did not want to be challenged because they had no answers, nor were they comfortable with being able to ?agree to disagree.?

What I also learned later in life is that I did not often speak my truth.? I was careful not to make others uncomfortable or to ask questions to make them think. I learned to ?be quiet,? even though I was still quite loquacious.

I have similar stories from my younger days where writing is concerned, graded with high marks for spelling, grammar and the like; yet, I was marked down considerably for content that did not fit the ?norm? or that was written in such a way to pose a challenge.

It was when I challenged myself and attended university in my mid-40s that I started to blossom.

Although I met some professors who did not share my beliefs and values and did not particularly care for my challenging nature and also tried to ?quiet me,? I saw a marked change in my being free to share my opinions and my questioning.? There were equally as many professors who were quite adept at returning the volley in a way that energized me.

And volley they did!

I have found that the Internet is another place where there are people who are also capable of returning the volley!? I am able to share my thoughts, opinions and much more without as much fear of the criticism

Yes, I still receive a lot of criticism. But I have been able to say what I need to say with much more confidence.? Doing so in writing has allowed me to find my ?voice,? able to talk about the things I think are important in a manner that is true to my personality. It has also helped me to develop similar skills in the way that I deliver the spoken word.

And I began to find others who think like I do. Not always in agreement with the content, but in concert with the right to say it. Friendship. Camaraderie. Like-mindedness. My cohorts.

My Tribe.

Now I am in the company of people from around the world who speak their minds.? Engage in conversation and philosophical debate. Who encourage me to do so.? Some like what I have to say and tell me. Others do not and also tell me.

I think this is a pretty good reason to continue to write online here on my blog and to find other avenues continue to speak what I think needs to be said.

From my head. From my heart.

Using my voice.

A message from the author:

To read my original ?Thank You for Your Service,? if you do a search for the title and my name, it will take you directly to the article.? From that article, you can find many other things that I have written in the early years online.? Let me know by commenting at the content that you? have stopped by.

And if you would like to speak your mind and use writing as a way to do it, I have recently been introduced to a new site that allows us to do so and get paid to do it. Each submission requires only 400 characters, not 400 words.? I have seen greater success in 5 days with 5 submissions than I have in other places I?ve written? over several months.? I encourage you to at least check the site out,? read the rules, sign up and try it out.? Bubblews ? A place you can ?Speak freely. Write your world.?

You, too, might just find YOUR voice.

Music Business in China - Artipot

We live in a time where there are not only increasing amounts of people releasing music due to the internet and home production tools, but endless distractions for people on all sides. When music production peaked in the 1980?s, people had little else besides a TV and their music player or stereo to distract them. Now people have in their hand, mobile, internet, video games, video cameras, instant messaging, social networking, and endless super cool apps to keep them occupied. This makes it increasingly difficult to get attention for your music and art. More and more, to get people's interest, you must have a great story! Only then they will be open and interested to listen to the music.

Now with new music production, promotion, marketing, sales and distribution, both within China and outside, to the existing Chinese artists through local office in Beijing, the industry is regaining its shape. Many other companies are now ready to offer music production services in China, some are based within China. The local office is staffed with bilingual locals who know the market and culture, and have experience working with Chinese and international artists there. These Companies have been legally registered as a Wholly Foreign Owned Enterprise in China. One of them is under the name '???????????????' which translates to 'Respect Truth (Beijing) Culture Consultancy Co. Ltd.' (This was as close as to the English name given the language and cultural differences. It is kind of translation of the Chinese name, that mean 'Church of Truth')

There are many option in China for recording, audio production, music composition, mastering and sound design / film post production. Because China is a complex and daunting market for a foreign company, the music industry starting out with the following basic range of services for music production:

For Chinese artists:
* Focusing on getting Chinese artists who are ready exposure internationally
* Getting international distribution and sales for Chinese music.
* Promotion and marketing for Chinese artists overseas by connecting with interested markets and fans

For International Artists:
* Digital distribution for international artists in China.
* Promotion and marketing in China focusing on key social networking sites.
* Collaboration with Chinese artists and recording traditional Chinese instruments with local professionals

As continuous work is being done in researching the industry and experimenting with new techniques for promotion and marketing music in China, there will also be offering licensing for Chinese music internationally in Film, TV, and online, expanding their revenue sources. China is an important market backed up by the latest statistics. There are many offers for Chinese artists who are ready in creating their own business and develop music career in China, to maximize their profit and control.

To sum up, China is a huge, emerging market for the music industry, but currently in its infancy, and immature. Professional assistance is desperately needed due to crippling discouragement for artists attributed to the pervasive downloading of music. There is also a huge lack of 'official' presence for foreign artists who are becoming very popular in China. That means huge opportunity for those willing to support, develop and nurture this challenging market.

US, China set the stage for Obama-Xi summit

BEIJING (AP) ? U.S. National Security Adviser Tom Donilon began discussions with Chinese officials Monday for a summit between their two presidents that will confront divisive security issues while trying to overcome a growing distrust between the governments.

Donilon and State Councilor Yang Jiechi, China's senior foreign policy official, said next month's summit is a chance for the U.S.'s Barack Obama and China's Xi Jinping to work through problems. Though they did not identify those challenges in their public remarks, ties are strained across the board, from longstanding differences over Iran's and North Korea's nuclear programs to new disputes over cyber-attacks and China's more assertive pursuit of territorial claims against U.S. allies Japan and the Philippines.

In a sign that both sides want to stem the drift besetting ties, the summit now scheduled for June 7-8 is taking place months earlier than the two presidents were supposed to meet. It's their first face-to-face meeting since Obama's re-election and Xi's promotion to head of the Communist Party last November. The setting ? at the private estate of the late publishing tycoon Walter Annenberg in southern California ? is supposed to be informal, giving Xi and Obama and chance to build a rapport.

That Xi agreed to an informal summit has been seen by Chinese and U.S. experts as positive. His predecessors always preferred formal state visits, splashing images of White House ceremonies and banquets in the Chinese media to bolster their standing as world statesmen.

Good will aside, distrust has deepened in relations in recent years as the U.S. feels its world leadership challenged and China, its power growing, demands greater deference to its interests and a larger say over global rule-setting. Chinese officials and state media regularly say Washington is thwarting China's rise, strengthening alliances in Asia to hem in Beijing and discouraging Chinese investment in the U.S. on national security issues.

The official Xinhua News Agency reported Monday that late last week battle ships and submarines from the Chinese navy's three fleets staged a war game in the South China Sea. The area is already a flashpoint, with Beijing's aggressive claims to disputed islands having rattled the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia and Brunei.

On Sunday, Li Keqiang ? on a visit to Germany in his first trip abroad as China's premier ? pressed China's claim to a cluster of East China Sea islands held by Japan. Traveling to Potsdam, where allied powers declared the terms for Japan's surrender 68 years ago in the waning days of World War II, Li told reporters that Japan must not "deny or glorify the history of fascist aggression."

The aggrieved sense emanating from Beijing goes beyond recent flare-ups in old territorial disputes. The website of the People's Daily, the Communist Party's flagship newspaper, is running a recurring column that takes a critical look at Americans and their institutions. First called "Immoral, dishonest Americans," the title of the column was changed to "The Americans you don't know about."

State Councilor Yang in welcoming Donilon said his trip helps "in strengthening the bilateral trust and cooperation." Looking toward the summit, Donilon said, "The meeting will be an important opportunity for our presidents to have in-depth discussions about US-China relations, and a wide range of global and regional challenges facing both our countries."

One item on Donilon's summit agenda is the guest list. Xi will stop in California after formal visits to Trinidad and Tobago and Mexico where he will be accompanied by a large group of senior officials. If that entourage descends in full on the Sunnylands estate, U.S. diplomats said the White House might feel the need to bring similarly large numbers, making the summit less intimate.

NASA creates the first topographic map of Titan, Saturn's largest moon

DNP NASA creates the first topographic map of Titan, Saturn's largest moon

Scientists observing Saturn's moon Titan with NASA's Cassini spacecraft have boldly gone where no man has gone before -- visually, anyway. Using radar imagery collected from nine years of Cassini flybys, researchers were able to patch together the first global topographic map of Titan, published in the July 2013 issue of Icarus. Ralph Lorenz, a member of the Cassini radar team at Johns Hopkins, said, "Titan has so much interesting activity -- like flowing liquids and moving sand dunes -- but to understand these processes it's useful to know how the terrain slopes." In particular, understanding the moon's terrain can reveal a lot about its dynamic climate system. Like Earth, Titan's atmosphere is composed primarily of nitrogen, but the liquids and vapors on the moon's surface are made of methane and other organic chemicals integral to the creation of complex life. By studying the relationship between atmosphere and terrain, researchers hope to learn more about the evolution of life in its earliest stages, and inspire curious minds to turn their eyes toward Titan.
