Blast hits Damascus, Turkey sends troops to border

BEIRUT/ISKENDERUN, Turkey (Reuters) - Rebel forces attacked Syria's main court in central Damascus on Thursday, state television said, while Turkey deployed troops and anti-aircraft rocket launchers to the Syrian border, building pressure on President Bashar al-Assad.

A loud explosion echoed through the streets and a column of black smoke rose over Damascus, an Assad stronghold that until the last few days had seemed largely beyond the reach of rebels. State television described it as a "terrorist" blast.

Dozens of wrecked and burning cars were strewn over a car park used by lawyers and judges. The state news agency SANA said three people had been wounded by a bomb hidden in one of the cars.

The fighting coincided with a Turkish military buildup on its border with Syria and a growing sense of urgency in Western- and Arab-backed diplomatic efforts to promote the idea of a unity government to end 16 months of bloodshed.

But Assad himself dismissed the idea of any outside solution to Syria's crisis.

"We will not accept any non-Syrian, non-national model, whether it comes from big countries or friendly countries. No one knows how to solve Syria's problems as well as we do," Assad told the state television channel of Syria's ally Iran.

He said Turkey's official stance belied the Turkish people's "positive view" of Syria.

A first substantial convoy of about 30 Turkish military vehicles, including trucks loaded with anti-aircraft missile batteries dispatched from the coastal town of Iskenderun, headed towards the Syrian border 50 km (30 miles) away.

A Turkish official who declined to be named said he did not know how many troops or vehicles were being moved but they were being stationed in the Yayladagi, Altinozu and Reyhanli border areas.

A general in the rebel Free Syria Army said on Friday that Syrian government forces had amassed around 170 tanks north of the city Aleppo, near the Turkish border, but there was no independent confirmation of the report.

General Mustafa al-Sheikh, head of the Higher Military Council, an association of senior officers who defected from Assad's forces, said the tanks had assembled at the Infantry School near the village of Musalmieh northeast of the city of Aleppo, 30 kms (19 miles) from the Turkish border.

"The tanks are now at the Infantry School. They're either preparing to move to the border to counter the Turkish deployment or attack the rebellious (Syrian) towns and villages in and around the border zone north of Aleppo," Sheikh told Reuters by telephone from the border.

Last Friday Syria shot down a Turkish warplane over the Mediterranean. Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan responded by ordering his troops to treat any Syrian military element approaching the border as a military target.

This could cover Syrian forces pursuing rebels towards the border, or patrolling helicopters or warplanes. Syria said at the weekend that it had killed several "terrorists" infiltrating from Turkey.

TURKISH CONVOYS

A Reuters reporter near the town of Antakya saw the Turkish convoy moving out of the hills and through small towns on a narrow highway escorted by police.

Another convoy left a base at Gaziantep and headed for Kilis province, the site of a large camp for Syrian refugees. Video from the DHA agency showed the group of about 12 trucks and transporters filing through the gates of the base.

David Hartwell, Middle East analyst at IHS Jane's, called the Turkish action a pragmatic response to the downing of the Turkish aircraft, which Syria says was flying low and fast in Syrian airspace. "Damascus has been warned once. I doubt there will be a second warning."

Turkey, in the front line of Western efforts to press Assad to step down, hosts 33,000 Syrian refugees near its southern border as well as units of the rebel Free Syrian Army (FSA).

Members of the FSA, talking close to the border, told Reuters they did not believe the Turkish deployments were on a large scale or aimed at any crossborder intervention.

"The Turks know that any large-scale military action would need international support," said a senior FSA commander who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Turkey has in the past spoken of opening a humanitarian corridor on Syrian soil if the refugee flow grew unmanageable or if the violence and killing became intolerable.

Wary of igniting a regional sectarian war, it insists this would be possible only with U.N. backing. Western- and Arab-backed efforts to forge a joint diplomatic approach with Russia have so far failed.

Thursday's attack in Damascus follows weeks of growing FSA pressure. Rebels stormed a pro-Assad television channel on Wednesday, and have also targeted police and security barracks.

Syria denies there has been a mass popular uprising against Assad and says that the rebels who have now largely taken over from months of unarmed anti-government protests are foreign-backed Islamist terrorists, including members of al Qaeda.

Assad told Iranian television that his government had a duty to eliminate these to protect its people, and that Washington was content for al Qaeda to attack countries it did not like.

"When you eliminate a terrorist, it's possible that you are saving the lives of tens, hundreds, or even thousands," he said.

NEW ANNAN PLAN

Diplomats at the United Nations say international mediator Kofi Annan will seek backing from the permanent members of the U.N. Security Council and key Middle East players on Saturday for a plan for a political transition in Syria.

They say the proposal does not stipulate that Assad must step down but does call for a unity government that would exclude figures who jeopardize stability - a condition that many not be enough to convince opposition groups to participate.

"The proposal is still murky to us but I can tell you that if it does not clearly state that Assad must step down, it will be unacceptable to us," said Samir Nashar, an executive member of the international Syrian National Council.

Rebel fighters said there was no part of the plan they could accept, and that they had lost patience with Annan's efforts.

"This is just a new labyrinth. It is new silliness for us to get lost in, and haggle over who can participate and who can't," said Ahmed, an FSA fighter in Homs, epicenter of the revolt against four decades of Assad family rule in which more than 10,000 people have been killed, by a U.N. count.

An FSA member in Damascus added: "The FSA is doing its work, and it is not looking to the outside world. We don't want a transitional government unless it is the one formed by rebel military councils. The world is conspiring against the Syrian revolution."

Having it all: The work-family balance debate continues

Having it all ? a professional career and a family ? isn't possible, says Anne-Marie Slaughter in a recent Atlantic article. The piece reignited the debate about difficulties for working mothers and the need for more flexible time in the workplace.

Pearson has a message for Anne-Marie Slaughter, the former State Department policymaker who lamented in The Atlantic that her "have it all" approach to work and family didn't go so well: She's not surprised.

The difference? Pearson is happy. She knows that even if having it all is a myth, she'll revert with pleasure to part-time work without guilt or regret.

"I feel that while feminists of the previous generation may have told my generation that we could 'have it all,' we have observed their 'have it all' lives long enough to see through the well-meaning front," said Pearson, who chose to stay in her Midwest hometown for her medical training so relatives can help her and her husband, a teacher, with the kids.

"We're not surprised when someone like Dr. Slaughter reneges, but maybe they are, and they feel they have let us down. It's no one's fault," she said. "It's the nature of the beast when trying to combat hundreds of years of inequity in a matter of decades."

Slaughter, 53, returned to academia at Princeton after two years in Washington, away from her teen boys but with a husband at home and her tenure intact. Since her magazine story last week burst open the debate on the difficulties for working mothers, she has heard from hundreds of women, most of whom were grateful that such a high-flying career juggler has spoken up about the need for more flexibility on the job.

One was a policewoman. Another a social worker. There was a Nobel laureate, and women who were the first in their families to graduate from college.

"They're saying, 'Thank you, I've been looking for honest counsel and haven't been able to find it,'" Slaughter told The Associated Press on Monday.

Consider Ana Homayoun, 33, in San Francisco, among the honest. She works as an education counselor and career trainer for high school and college girls. The toll on their lives gets lost in the have-it-all debate about career and family, she said.

"I talk to them about this issue all the time," Homayoun said. "It's this message that you can and should be able to have it all, all the time, and for a lot of them that seems to be polarizing and shame-inducing because they're really anxious about getting into the real world, and they can't figure out in their own head how they're supposed to make it all work."

For many, she said, waiting until they're Slaughter's age and at her elite level is too late.

"The planning what they want out of their lives needs to start in high school, college, to avoid reacting to a bad situation later," Homayoun said. "A lot of my friends in their 30s are leaving corporate high-powered tracks, not because they lack ambition or talent but because it doesn't seem feasible or workable for the entire arc of their lives."

Kathy Doyle Thomas, 55, is the executive vice president of a book store chain and chairman of the board of the Retail Advertising and Marketing Association. She's still on Plan A as the mother of three who has been juggling home and work for more than a decade.

As a woman in technology, I hear a lot about the lack of women in the field.

While I was in college, I noticed that I was usually the only female in the class. My teachers treated me the same as the guys and my male classmates never seemed to care that I was a woman. After I graduated and started attending events like Microsoft?s annual Tech Ed, I realized just how much of a minority women are are.

The thing that keeps catching my attention though is how much of an issue people want to make out of it.

Believe it or not, the technology field wasn?t always a ?man?s? arena. ?It wasn?t until recent years that women became a downward statistic. A few of the reasons blamed for the decline are the fear of sexual?harassment,?women not being smart enough, and the tech world not being friendly enough to women.

Since these days there are more men than women in the technology focused careers,?I can understand the fear of sexual harassment and discrimination. I also understand that those same things happen in almost all careers and to both men and women (nursing comes to mind).

I?ve have just as many negative experiences with women as I have men in IT. While at Tech Ed in 2009, I was approached with smiles from most of the men and with?icy?tones from many of the women. In one video taken at CES,?a marketing booth babe made the comment that ?I don?t know any women that would choose the tech world over say?shopping, or cooking, or something like that.? Just goes to show the women can be just as sexist towards other women as men.

Some seem to believe that the lack of women in IT is because women are just not that good at computers and technology.

I once read that one reason you don?t see a lot of women programmers is because women are not good at it. Let me set the record straight; back when computers first started out, there were?more women than men doing the programming. I?ve?taken programming classes and passed with a high grades. The reason I don?t program is not because I?m not any good, it?s because I don?t enjoy it. The same could be said for other women and men that prefer other areas of IT over programming.

Recently, I read an article that suggested the tech industry be made more female friendly. Instead of trying to change the industry, I think we should start with the school system.

As a high school student I was never encouraged to take any particular class. I saw the girls typically took parenting and music. The guys would find their way into mechanics and tech courses. I was a rebel and always went towards the tech classes. Looking back at all the things I learned, I wish they had required for both genders to take a at least one tech related credit.

Programming is a good way to teach problem solving. It also taught me that there is more than one way to solve a problem. Another important lesson programming taught me is that with some creativity, you can find loop holes to the rules. Conclusion: you can learn more than just what is written on the course description when it comes to tech courses. Even though you might not remember some of the code, you will remember the lesson you learned while learning the code.

What?s scary for me is the lack of public schools that require a computer related course for a high school diploma. While researching the topic, I found that only twelve out of fifty states in the United States (at the state level) require a computer credit to graduate. Most of the schools required between one-half to one credit for graduation.

Why is it in a day and age where?technology?is at every turn, do we not require our students to take at least a credit?s worth of technology related courses?

It seems like it would be a good idea considering that so many jobs require use of a computer in some form.

In my house, we?re a little against the grain. My husband is a stay at home dad and I?m a full time geek with a degree in Computer Engineering. We both encourage our son to enjoy all aspects of the home and geek world. My husband takes him into the kitchen to cook and I sit with him on the iPad and computer. I just wish our ?our school systems could follow suit.

Chicken and egg problem is right.?I think the push in early education is very helpful to get women in these fields, which is why I write about that a lot.?But I honestly get a little ticked off when people say the tech field is not friendly to women. Maybe I?ve been extremely lucky, but I?ve just never seen it. Sure I?ve listened to my fair share of tasteless humor. Perhaps a few times in my career I had to speak up and prove I knew my stuff, but that?s about all. Men are not evil and at some point, I kind of feel like I need to defend my peers.?I?m not saying that women who claimed bad experiences are lying, I just think there?s a lot of bad rep that?s perhaps not deserved as often as people might think.?

Mariziah Karch saw another side of the topic ?You know, I don?t feel unwelcome in a majority male work environment, but I?m me, not all women of the world. I get along with men and share a lot of common interests. I also can?t say that I?ve NEVER been sexually harassed, either (never in my current position, though). Go to conferences, and you?ll see bunches of booth babes. They range from the subtle ? hiring of attractive female PR people ? to the women with lycra outfits and boob jobs walking around in platform heels at CES.?Then, when you?re looking for promotion, that promotion is going to be influenced by who you know. Whether intentional or not, someone is going to promote the person they have beers with. That?s why there?s talk of mentorship and its role in the workplace.?

Current statistics show that women are slowly on the rise in tech and STEM related fields. According to Womenwhotech.org, 25% of all IT jobs are held by women. CompTIA states?that ?between January 2011 and January 2012, there has been a 28.9% jump in women IT workers. Some might look at those numbers and think they?re still low, and they?re right but, the numbers are rising. More girls are becoming open to the idea of programming software rather than just using it.

I?m so tired of the constant ?why aren?t there more women in tech?.? I?m tired of the?cynicism?from men and women that ?anything you can do, I can do better.? I would love to see this world become more open to both men and women enjoying life, because it?s fun and not because we are told our gender can?t or shouldn?t.

Former Obama administration official Anne-Marie Slaughter talks to TODAY's Natalie Morales about her controversial article in The Atlantic, which debates whether women can juggle high-powered careers and be good mothers at the same time.

That was the message that came from a powerful woman who sparked a national debate last week about women and their success in the workplace and as mothers.

Anne-Marie Slaughter, a former U.S. State Department official and now a Princeton professor, spoke about her The Atlantic article, ?Why Women Still Can?t Have It All?, Monday on TODAY, and wanted to make it clear that her piece was not negative but more of a call to action to women struggling with balancing work and life.

?Women have come leaps and bounds,? she said about the advancements women have made in the workplace, ?but we need another round of change.?

Working mothers, she continued, make it to a point in their career where they?re beginning to climb the ladder of succes, but then they end up feeling ?unbelievably torn? when family and work responsibilities clash.

Indeed, many women are questioning whether they can really have it all. An informal poll taken last week in an article about Slaughter?s story and the controversy that ensured, asked ?Do you think women can have it all?? found only 11 percent of the nearly 4,000 respondents felt it was possible, compared to 48 percent that offered a resounding ?no? to the question.

But in a sign of hope, 41 percent voted: ?Maybe, when the workplace changes.?

And it?s change Slaughter wants to see.

?We need to be honest about how hard it is,? she said about the first step women need to take. And secondly, she stressed, ?you have to ask for what you need. If you need to work from home, ask for it.?

In the end, she added, it?s all about a serious ?desire for change.?

Change needs to happen on a larger scale as well, maintained?Debra L. Ness, president of the National Partnership for Women & Families.?

"Most of America?s women and their families are confronted on a daily basis with the fact that ?having it all? is still a distant dream, and we know that it will not get better until our workplaces are family friendly," she said. "We need policies like paid sick days and paid family and medical leave for all workers, and all workers need the flexibility to be caregivers and breadwinners for their families."

Slaughter's article, she added, "should be a call to action for employers and lawmakers to finally address the growing demand for workplaces that meet the needs of 21st century families."

Yet seemingly, when all is said and done it seems, in this case, it becomes impossible to teach old dogs new tricks.

This past week (06.21.12) talking with Tom Keene on Bloomberg TV, Greenspan sprung to the aid of the Wall Street Mafia militating to emasculate the Dodd- Frank legislation by proclaiming loud and clear there is no need to return to the Glass -Steagall Bank Act and all it would imply in restricting the proprietary trading of banks. "Glass-Steagall was never a useful vehicle" Mr. Greenspan's words. JPMorgan's ambitious venture into prop trading, as has been reported extensively, was to have their huge unhedged (gambling) position in financial instruments blow up to a trading loss initially reported as a $2 billion wipe out, but now understood to be nearing $6 billion. Perhaps manageable for JPMorgan Chase, but such an extraordinary digression from traditional banking methodology has become, by example, and with the support of the likes of an Alan Greenspan springing to the aid of the Wall Street Brigade proclaiming there is no need to return to the Glass-Steagall Bank Act and by extension its Volcker Rule, placing our entire financial system at risk.

As an aside, the recent Congressional Hearings on JPMorgan's recent trading losses, might well have been far more enlightening if questions were also posed to Dimon about JPMorgan's proprietary trading in commodities such as crude oil, copper, and the like, and exactly what does that have to do with banking?

Oh, by the way, it has just been reported that Jamie Dimon will be getting a double digit raise this year on top of his tens of millions in 2011.

Ariz. immigrants group not surprised by ruling

An Arizona immigrant rights group says it is not surprised by the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling on the state's immigration law.

Puente Arizona director Carlos Garcia says the organization expected the high court to uphold part of the law that requires police to check the status of someone suspected to be in the U.S. illegally.

He says Puente will begin reaching out to law enforcement about how they will enforce the law

The court did strike down several key provisions of the law.

At some point in the not-too-distant future, we?ll all use 3-D printers to make new tools, replacement body parts?and dinner. In the meantime, early adopters are already giving the technology a try with downloadable blueprints for characters such as Yoda, that wise Jedi master of "Star Wars" fame.

The time-lapse?demonstration is courtesy of?YouTube user BusyBotz, who uses a commercial MakerBot Replicator 3-D printer?which costs?about $1,750. The 3-D model for Yoda is available from Thingiverse, a MakerBot-powered website where users share their digital designs.

The website aims to get people to share designs to feed into their 3-D printers, spreading the adoption of the technology, which MakerBot hopes will be widespread so they can sell more printers.

BusyBotz?s demonstration with Yoda showcases the fine detail available when the printer is set to build in 0.1 mm -high layer increments ? that is, Yoda is built up one 0.1 mm layer at a time.?

All things built with the 3-D printers are built layer upon layer.?

"There is a significant increase in detail compared to printing the same model at 0.2 mm," BusyBotz notes. ?It takes longer, but in a print like this, it is worth it.?

Li-ion battery packs offer a number of advantages over the nickel-metal-hydride (NiMH) batteries that power today's hybrid vehicles. In general, they are 25 to 30 percent smaller and 50 percent lighter, which makes them easier to package in a vehicle, and can be tuned to increase power to boost acceleration or to increase energy to extend driving distance.

While Ford C-MAX Hybrid will operate much like today's hybrid vehicles, C-MAX Energi will benefit from daily charging to maximize its all-electric range. Thanks to the efficiencies of its right-sized battery system, the plug-in hybrid easily recharges 100 percent overnight on a 120-volt outlet.

A full charge in C-MAX Energi allows owners to increase their driving significantly in all-electric mode and drastically reduce their use of the on-board fuel engine.

On start-up, Ford C-MAX Energi operate in charge-depletion mode, providing electric driving range. When the battery has been depleted or certain conditions are met, it switches to charge-sustaining hybrid mode for continued optimal fuel efficiency.

Ford worked with a supplier to provide an industry-standard five-point plug for C-MAX Energi (and new Focus Electric) that is ergonomically comfortable to hold as well as durably and distinctively designed. The plug handle uses a matte-finished black rubber for a comfortable, non-slip grip and the plug head is shielded with a glossy white hard plastic to protect the electronics. The Ford Blue Oval trademark helps make the device immediately recognizable.

When the cord set connector is plugged into the vehicle's charge port, which is located conveniently between the driver's door and front wheel well, it activates a light ring that loops around the port twice in acknowledgement of connectivity. The light ring then illuminates in quadrants as the vehicle charges. Flashing quadrants represent charge in progress and solid-lit quadrants show stages of charge completion. When the entire ring is solidly lit, the vehicle is fully charged.

Smarter interface
Ford C-MAX Energi owners have access to a suite of driver information systems - on-board and off-board - designed to help them manage the recharge process, manage the most eco-friendly route on-board, remotely control their vehicle's charge and preconditioning settings, monitor battery state of charge and maximize energy efficiency to extend use of electric mode. Ford C-MAX Hybrid owners also will benefit from the on-board features.

Among these tools is a unique execution of MyFord Touch driver connect technology, especially for electrified driving. It offers exceptional configurability of vehicle information, including fuel level, battery power level, and average and instant miles per gallon.

The cluster's new MyView feature allows drivers to access even more vehicle data such as the electrical demands of vehicle accessories, including air conditioning, which influences fuel economy and the electric driving range of the Ford C-MAX Energi.
The Brake Coach feature helps to educate drivers to optimize their use of the regenerative brakes to recapture kinetic energy and send it back to the battery, also reducing wear on the brakes.

Long-term fuel efficiency can be displayed in two ways - either as a traditional chart or using an innovative display that shows a growing leafy vine on the right side of the cluster. Off-board, Ford C-MAX Energi owners in North America can maintain constant contact with the car anywhere they have mobile phone or web access using the Ford-developed MyFord Mobile.

MyFord Mobile enables access to a secure Ford website and smartphone/feature phone app to get instant vehicle status information, perform key functions remotely, monitor the car's state of charge and current range, get various alerts including when the vehicle requires charging, remotely program charge settings and download vehicle data for analysis.

The feature also allows the owner to program the vehicle to use electricity from the grid to heat or cool the battery and cabin while plugged in. For example, during hot summer months, owners can preprogram the car the evening before to be fully charged - and fully cooled to a particular temperature - by a certain time the following morning. Users can also locate the vehicle with GPS, remotely start the vehicle, and remotely lock and unlock the car doors.

Working with MapQuest, MyFord Mobile can communicate charge station and other points of interest to Ford C-MAX Energi using SYNC's Traffic, Directions and Information (TDI) service. Turn-by-turn guidance is provided by the in-car map-based Navigation System. Drivers can also get up-to-date charging station information in their vehicle directly through SYNC TDI simply by connecting to SYNC Services.

Proven powersplit technology
Ford C-MAX Energi and C-MAX Hybrid build on the success of the critically acclaimed powersplit architecture Ford uses in its current hybrids, including the Ford Fusion Hybrid, winner of the 2010 MOTOR TREND Car of the Year award.

In a powersplit hybrid, the electric motor and gasoline-powered engine can work together or separately to maximize efficiency. The engine also can operate independently of vehicle speed, charging the batteries or providing power to the wheels as needed. The motor alone can provide sufficient power to the wheels in low-speed, low-load conditions, and work with the engine at higher speeds.

While this system enables the current Fusion Hybrid to operate in fuel-saving electric mode up to 47 mph, Ford is targeting higher electric operating speeds for Ford C-MAX Hybrid and even more capability for C-MAX Energi, which will have the advantage of additional battery power.

Ford's global C-car strategy
C-MAX Energi and C-MAX Hybrid are two of at least 10 new models or derivatives that Ford will launch around the world based on its new global C-car platform - Ford's first truly global One Ford platform.

Ford's new generation of C-segment vehicles will be sold in more than 120 markets and will account for more than 2 million units annually. The C-segment accounts for one in four cars sold worldwide today and, in conjunction with the B-segment, is expected to rise to 50 percent of all cars sold globally by 2013.

The all-new C-MAX lineup also introduces a number of advanced new technologies to the compact multi-activity vehicle class. More often found only on larger or more premium cars, these technologies are focused on enhanced comfort, safety and sustainability, including the availability of new and powerful, yet highly fuel-efficient, low-CO2 Ford EcoBoost? gas engines.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Google's shareholders gave their support Thursday to the company's plan to issue a new class of stock. Google's co-founders, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, and Executive Chairman Eric Schmidt had pushed the move to ensure that they maintain long-term control of the company.

The new class will effectively split shares 2 to 1. It's an unusual approach that reflects a desire by Google's founders to preserve the company's long-term interests.

The new shares won't have any voting power. Employees given Google stock in the future will get the non-voting stock, allowing voting power to remain with existing shareholders. The same will hold true for companies that Google buys using its stock.

Here's further explanation of the plan:

Q. Why is Google doing this?

A. Google's current stock structure concentrates voting power with Page, Brin and Schmidt. Google is afraid of diluting that power as it issues new shares to employees and to companies that it acquires through stock purchases. Google says there's no immediate danger of that happening, but it sees no need to wait.

"It's important to bear in mind that this proposal will only have an effect on governance over the very long term," Page and Brin wrote in an April letter to investors. "It's just that since we know what we want to do, there's no reason to delay the decision."

Q. What does this mean for existing shareholders?

A. Investors typically have Class A stock now. They will be given an equal number of Class C shares, which won't have any voting power. The value of the Class A stock will be split between the two, so if the stock is trading at $600 when it happens, a Class A share will be worth $300 and a Class C share will be worth $300.

Investors will have twice the number of shares they held before, but the total voting power and stock value won't change. So if Bob owns 100 shares worth $600 each, he will own 200 shares worth $300 each. Bob will still have 100 votes, and the value of all his shares will still be $60,000.

Investors will be free to buy and sell shares in either class independently, and the new class will get its own ticker. If Bob sells his 100 Class C shares, he will have 100 votes through the Class A stock, and the shares will be worth $30,000. But if Bob sells his 100 Class A shares, he will have no vote on the Class C stock worth $30,000.

Q. Is this a new strategy for Google?

A. No. Since it went public in 2004, Google's founders have emphasized the need for long-term governance. They believe they need to retain the voting power to do that. The stock structure had been designed from the start to leave power with Page, Brin and Schmidt.

Page and Brin argue that Google will be more successful if it concentrates on the long term, even if that means short-term stumbles in meeting Wall Street's targets for earnings and revenue.

The founders note that it took three years for the first phones based on Google's Android operating system to come out and another three years for the system to reach critical mass. They don't want investors voting with short-term interests in mind.

"These kinds of investments are not for the faint-hearted," the founders said.

Q. So is this a split or a dividend?

A. It's neither in the traditional sense. The stock is effectively being split, as the value of each share will be cut in half. Stock splits allow smaller investors to buy shares, but in this case, the move is driven more by a desire to retain control and less by shareholder pressure. It can be considered a dividend, but instead of getting cash, investors will get stock.

Q. When will this happen?

A. Google will announce details later. Google doesn't expect the split to occur until late this year because of a shareholder lawsuit seeking to block the move.
