HELENA, Mont. (AP) -- The University of Montana will pay former football coach Robin Pflugrad an additional $78,000 to resolve all issues relating to his dismissal, the university and Pflugrad announced Monday.
Pflugrad will receive $44,500 for lost summer camp income and radio and television appearances he would have made had he continued as Montana's coach this fall. The settlement also calls for him to be paid $27,181 for unused vacation and $6,376 for unused sick leave. The lump sum payment of just over $78,000 is to be made on Jan. 2, 2013, according to the settlement agreement.
Pflugrad will continue to receive his salary and benefits through the end of the year, when his contract expires. His salary for the year is $157,000.
University President Royce Engstrom relieved Pflugrad of his duties on March 29, but declined to give a reason.
Since then, the Department of Justice announced it was investigating the university and campus police, along with local police and prosecutors, over the handling of rape cases in Missoula and the Department of Education announced it was investigating a sexual discrimination complaint filed in January against the football program.
The university also recently announced the football program has been under investigation by the NCAA since late January. The NCAA did not give a reason and Engstrom said he does not know the reason for the inquiry.
Pflugrad coached the Griz during the 2010 and 2011 seasons, winning a share of the Big Sky Conference championship and advancing to the semifinals of the Football Championship Subdivision playoffs in 2011. He was chosen as the league's coach of the year.
"Coach Pflugrad was a dedicated coach who was successful on the field for the University of Montana," Engstrom said in a statement. "We thank him for his service to our program and we wish him well in his future endeavors in college football."
Pflugrad said he was glad to have the opportunity to coach at Montana and that he hopes to continue his career in college football.
