Romney limits attacks on Obama as U.S. recovers from Sandy

TAMPA (Reuters) - Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney held back from his usual attacks on President Barack Obama on Wednesday, as his campaign offered a more upbeat message with the East reeling from the storm Sandy.

As Obama travels to New Jersey to survey the damage with Republican Governor Chris Christie, Romney staged a show of strength in Florida, the most populous swing state where polls show him narrowly ahead.

He was joined by two of the most important politicians in the state, Republican Senator Marco Rubio and former Governor Jeb Bush, at a rally in a Tampa airport hangar.

Romney, who canceled political events earlier this week due to the storm, urged Florida voters to send donations to the Red Cross to help the victims. He said he believed his election next Tuesday would also be an example of Americans coming together.

"We come together at times like these. Now people coming together is what's also going to happen on November 7," he said, referring to the day after the election.

Romney is doing better in polls in Florida than in Ohio, another must-win state where Obama was up five points in a New York Times-Quinnipiac University poll on Wednesday.

"He's going to win Florida," Bush told reporters confidently as he boarded Romney's plane.

Romney aides say the race is essentially tied and have taken steps in recent days to try to take advantage of what they see as an opportunity in Pennsylvania, where polls have been tightening in the traditionally Democratic state.

The Romney campaign has spent on advertising in Pennsylvania although there has been no plan for the candidate to travel there.

In his remarks, Romney did not mention Obama by name. Instead he said electing the Republican would provide an opportunity for change.

"My view is pretty straightforward. I believe this is a time for America to take a different course, that this should be a turning point for our country," he said.

Microsoft: we misspoke, actually, they're 'Windows Store apps'

It happens all the time -- someone misspoke. During an address at Build yesterday, a Microsoft employee told a crowd that the company has taken to calling its apps "Windows 8 Store Applications." Turns out that's not quite right -- the proper terminology is the slightly more elegant "Windows Store apps," as per a note from a Redmond spokesperson. So there you go. No more Metro, no more "Windows 8 Store applications" -- just plain, old "Windows Store apps."

Kodak posts larger loss amid bankruptcy costs

(Reuters) - Eastman Kodak Co on Tuesday said its third-quarter loss grew 41 percent from a year earlier, reflecting restructuring and other costs as the bankrupt camera pioneer shifts its business focus toward printing from photography.

The net loss widened to $312 million, or $1.15 per share, from $222 million, or 83 cents, a year earlier, Kodak said in a regulatory filing.

Revenue fell 19 percent to $1.02 billion, hurt by a weakened economy, currency fluctuations, and the decision to exit some businesses, Kodak said.

Excluding restructuring and reorganization costs, Kodak said it lost $139 million in the quarter, compared with roughly $205 million a year earlier, and ended September with $1.13 billion of cash.

The Rochester, New York-based company has been in talks with creditors on a possible reorganization plan that Chief Executive Antonio Perez hopes will enable it to emerge from Chapter 11 protection next year.

Kodak has shuttered its digital camera business and plans to stop selling inkjet printers. It is still exploring options to sell more than 1,100 digital patents after failing to win acceptable bids in an auction held in August.

The company filed for bankruptcy protection on January 19 after failing to keep up as consumers and rivals shifted to digital photography from film photography. High pension costs have also weighed on Kodak.

The case is In re: Eastman Kodak Co, U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Southern District of New York, No. 12-10202.

Syria war puts anti-US alliance on the defensive

BEIRUT (AP) ? When the Hamas rulers of Gaza recently gave a hero's welcome to the ruler of Qatar, an arch foe of the Syrian regime, it sent a strong message reverberating across the capitals in Tehran, Damascus and Beirut.

The powerful, anti-American alliance of Iran, Syria and militant groups Hezbollah and Hamas, once dubbed the "Axis of Resistance," is fraying.

Iran's economy is showing signs of distress from nuclear sanctions, Syria's president is fighting for his survival and Hezbollah in Lebanon is under fire by opponents who blame it for the assassination of an anti-Syrian intelligence official. Hamas ? the Palestinian arm ? has bolted.

"We're seeing basically the resistance axis becoming much more vulnerable and under duress. So even if it survives, it's really under tremendous pressure," said Fawaz Gerges, director of the Middle East Center at the London School of Economics.

"The Hamas shift to the Saudi-Qatari-Turkish orbit represents a major nail in the coffin of the resistance axis," he said. "Now you are talking about Iran and Syria and to a lesser extent Iraq and this undermines the social element because Hamas added the very important Sunni dimension."

The axis is one of two powerful camps that divide the Middle East into spheres of competing influence. It faces off against the wealthy, powerful monarchies of Saudi Arabia and Qatar allied loosely with most of the other Arab countries and neighboring Turkey, which like Iran is Muslim but not Arab.

The fault line is sharply sectarian ? Iran and Hezbollah are Shiite and Assad's regime is dominated by the Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam. Hamas, which is Sunni, had been the exception before it strayed. Qatar, Saudi Arabia and other Sunni Muslim-led Arab countries in the Gulf have been trying to stem the regional influence of Iran.

Also, the Sunni countries, along with Turkey, support the Sunni-dominated opposition waging the civil war against Assad's rule in Syria.

The axis had been gaining power over the decade before the Syrian uprising began in March 2011 and formed a powerful front against Israel and the key U.S. allies in the Middle East such as the oil-rich Gulf states. Iran has long supported Hezbollah and Hamas as proxies in its battle against Israel. And Tehran also troubled the west with its dogged pursuit of uranium enrichment, a program the U.S. and its allies suspect is aimed at producing nuclear weapons but which Iran says is for peaceful purposes.

Syria has long boasted about being one of the few protectors of militant groups fighting Israel. It is the main transit point of weapons brought from Iran to Hezbollah and a collapse of Assad's regime would make it difficult for arms to reach the militant group that has been exchanging threats with the Jewish state and fought a 2006 war with Israel.

The axis also spread its influence to Shiite majority Iraq, where the fall of Saddam Hussein and his Sunni-dominated regime gave way to a government controlled by Shiites.

Only few years ago, the coalition was becoming so powerful that King Abdullah of Jordan warned of a "Shiite crescent," meaning countries from Iran, Iraq, Syria and Lebanon.

A new boldness was seen in 2010 when Hezbollah leader Sheik Hassan Nasrallah emerged from hiding for a rare public trip to Damascus, where he attended a meeting with his powerful regional allies, Assad and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. The leaders smiled confidently and appeared relaxed in footage of their meetings, a show of force meant to deter and demonstrate the unshakable power of the "Axis of Resistance."

The uprising against Assad that erupted 19 months ago, amid tumultuous changes sweeping the Arab world, shook a major pillar of the alliance.

"The fate of the alliance rests on the future of the Assad regime. If Assad goes, Iran and Hezbollah will suffer and find it much more difficult to plan, coordinate, and communicate," said Bilal Saab, a Middle East expert at the Monterey Institute of International Studies.

The brutal crackdown by Assad's regime on the Sunni-dominated uprising was an embarrassment to Hamas, the main Palestinian arm of the coalition. Hamas leaders in exile, who had been based in Damascus since the late 1990s, left for Egypt, Qatar and other countries.

Hamas officials say they could not be seen supporting a regime that was brutally suppressing a popular rebellion, particularly since most of those rising up against Assad are fellow Sunni Muslims.

This about-turn also caused new tensions with the Palestinian movement's main financial backer, Iran. Tehran demanded that Hamas step up and support Assad publicly. Hamas refused to do so, but didn't break ties entirely with Tehran, for lack of an alternative source of funds.

However, another benefactor may now be stepping forward.

Last week, the emir of Qatar, a vociferous critic of Assad, became the first foreign leader to visit the Gaza Strip. In a way, it formally sealed the break by Hamas from the "Axis of Resistance."

The trip offering the internationally isolated Hamas leadership there an unprecedented stamp of approval and Qatar promised more than $400 million in development projects for the impoverished territory.

The Qatari leader's generosity will likely give him some leverage over Hamas' decision-making at a time of growing debate within the movement over whether to stay in the orbit of Iran and other radical groups or move closer to the more moderate Gulf Arab camp.

Syria's president has painted the uprising against him as a universal attack designed to destroy the entire "Axis of Resistance." Last month, Assad told Iran's visiting foreign minister that the fight against his government "targets resistance as a whole, not only Syria."

"There will have to be serious adjustments in the axis should Assad go and preparations in Tehran for the day after are, I assume, already underway," Saab said.

Hezbollah, which supported revolutions in Tunisia, Egypt, Yemen, Libya and Bahrain, backed Assad in the crackdown. That support turned much of the Middle East's Sunni population against the group they once looked up to.

The group came under renewed pressure and criticism earlier this month when a car bomb in Beirut on Oct. 19 killed one of the country's top intelligence officials, an anti-Syrian figure. Hezbollah's opponents at home immediately pointed fingers at the group, calling for the resignation of the government Hezbollah now dominates.

Iran, the wealthiest and most powerful member of the alliance, has reportedly sent billions of dollars to Assad to help suppress the uprising, according to a recent report by Times of London. Tehran has given Hezbollah billions since the group was created in 1982.

But now Iran is struggling to cope with Western sanctions that have ravaged its economy. The sanctions aim at thwarting its nuclear program.

The distress was all too apparent in the freefall of Iran's currency the rial, which lost more than a third of its value in a week. The decline is widely tied to the effects of sanctions.

Israel has threatened to carry out a military strike against Iran's nuclear facilities to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. Gen. Amir Ali Hajizadeh, who heads the Iran's powerful Revolutionary Guard's aerospace division, warned that Iran will target U.S. bases in the region in the event of war with Israel.

"The question is not whether it (the alliance) will survive or not. The question is will it have the capacity to act offensively," said Gerges. It is on the defensive."

Elusive cat caught on camera in Himalayas

An elusive thick-furred feline has been caught on camera for the first time in the Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan.

A camera trap captured images of the fluffy Pallas's cat, also known as the manul, in the country's sprawling Wangchuck Centennial Park (WCP), which is also home to the snow leopard and Himalayan black bear. Pallas's cats had never been documented in the region before, according to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).

"This is an exciting and remarkable discovery that proves that the Pallas's cat exists in the Eastern Himalayas," Rinjan Shrestha, a conservation scientist with WWF, said in a statement. "This probably indicates a relatively undisturbed habitat, which gives us hope, not only for the Pallas's cat, but also the snow leopard, Tibetan wolf and other threatened species that inhabit the region."

The cat is a primitive species that has evolved little in the past 5 million years. It's about the size of a house cat and slightly resembles a Persian cat with its flat face, high-set eyes and thick coat, which keeps it warm at high altitudes. The Pallas's cat's distinct gray fur with dark spots on its head also helps it blend in with mountainous habitats across Central Asia.

Bhutan's park service and a WWF team surveying snow leopards in the region set up the camera traps, which first snapped a photo of a manul in January, then in February and April. In one shot, the cat appears to be sneaking right up to camera in for a close-up, staring right into the lens from the bottom-right corner of the frame.

The Pallas's cats are vanishing from some parts of Central Asia, including the Caspian Sea region and Pakistan's Baluchistan province, and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) has listed it as a near threatened species.

Superstorm Sandy causes flooding in New York City

NEW YORK (AP) ? Superstorm Sandy slammed into the New Jersey coastline with 80 mph winds Monday night and hurled an unprecedented 13-foot surge of seawater at New York City, flooding its tunnels, subway stations and the electrical system that powers Wall Street. At least 16 U.S. deaths were blamed on the storm, which brought the presidential campaign to a halt a week before Election Day.

For New York City at least, Sandy was not the dayslong onslaught many had feared, and the wind and rain that sent water sloshing into Manhattan from three sides began dying down within hours.

Still, the power was out for hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers and an estimated 6.2 million people altogether across the East. The full extent of the storm's damage across the region was unclear, and unlikely to be known until daybreak.

Stock trading will be closed in the U.S. for a second day Tuesday ? the first time the New York Stock Exchange will be closed for two consecutive days due to weather since 1888, when a blizzard struck the city.

Heavy rain and further flooding remain major threats for the next couple of days as the storm makes its way into Pennsylvania and up into New York State. The center of the storm was just outside Philadelphia near midnight, and its winds were down to 75 mph, just barely hurricane strength.

"It was nerve-racking for a while, before the storm hit. Everything was rattling," said Don Schweikert, who owns a bed-and-breakfast in Cape May, N.J., near where Sandy roared ashore. "I don't see anything wrong, but I won't see everything until morning."

As the storm closed in, it converged with a cold-weather system that turned it into a superstorm, a monstrous hybrid consisting not only of rain and high wind but snow in West Virginia and other mountainous areas inland.

It smacked the boarded-up big cities of the Northeast corridor ? Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York and Boston ? with stinging rain and gusts of more than 85 mph.

Just before Sandy reached land, forecasters stripped it of hurricane status, but the distinction was purely technical, based on its shape and internal temperature. It still packed hurricane-force wind, and forecasters were careful to say it was still dangerous to the tens of millions in its path.

Sandy made landfall at 8 p.m. near Atlantic City, which was already mostly under water and saw an old, 50-foot piece of its world-famous Boardwalk washed away earlier in the day.

Authorities reported a record surge 13 feet high at the Battery at the southern tip of Manhattan, from the storm and high tide combined.

In an attempt to lessen damage from saltwater to the subway system and the electrical network beneath the city's financial district, New York City's main utility cut power to about 6,500 customers in lower Manhattan. But a far wider swath of the city was hit with blackouts caused by flooding and transformer explosions.

About 670,000 customers were without power late Monday in the city and suburban Westchester County.

"This will be one for the record books," said John Miksad, senior vice president for electric operations at ConEdison. "This will be the largest storm-related outage in our history."

New York's transit agency said water surged into two major commuter tunnels, the Queens Midtown and the Brooklyn-Battery, and it cut power to some subway tunnels in lower Manhattan after water flowed into the stations and onto the tracks.

The subway system was shut down Sunday night, and the stock markets never opened Monday and are likely to be closed Tuesday as well. Schools were closed and Broadway theaters were dark.

"We knew that this was going to be a very dangerous storm, and the storm has met our expectations," Mayor Michael Bloomberg said. "This is a once-in-a-long-time storm."

More than 200 patients ? including 20 infants from neonatal intensive care ? were moved from New York University's Tisch Hospital after its power went out and a backup generator failed. The patients, some on respirators operating on battery power, were taken to other hospitals.

A construction crane atop a luxury high-rise collapsed in the high winds and dangled precariously 74 floors above the street. Forecasters said the wind at the top the building may have been close to 95 mph.

The facade of a four-story building in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood crumbled and collapsed, leaving the lights, couches, cabinets and desks inside visible from the street. No one was hurt.

As the storm approached the Northeast over the weekend, airlines canceled more than 12,000 flights in the region.

Storm damage was projected at $10 billion to $20 billion, meaning it could prove to be one of the costliest natural disasters in U.S. history.

Sixteen deaths were reported in New Jersey, New York, Maryland, North Carolina, West Virginia, Pennsylvania and Connecticut. Some of the victims were killed by falling trees. At least one death was blamed on the storm in Canada.

President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney canceled their campaign appearances at the very height of the race, with just over a week to go before Election Day. The president pledged the government's help and made a direct plea from the White House to those in the storm's path.

"When they tell you to evacuate, you need to evacuate," he said. "Don't delay, don't pause, don't question the instructions that are being given, because this is a powerful storm."

Sandy, which killed 69 people in the Caribbean before making its way up the Atlantic, began to hook left at midday toward the New Jersey coast.

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said people were stranded in Atlantic City, which sits on a barrier island. He accused the mayor of allowing them to stay there. With the hurricane roaring through, Christie warned it was no longer safe for rescuers, and advised people who didn't evacuate the coast to "hunker down" until morning.

While the hurricane's 90 mph winds registered as only a Category 1 on a scale of five, it packed "astoundingly low" barometric pressure, giving it terrific energy to push water inland, said Kerry Emanuel, a professor of meteorology at MIT.

And the New York metropolitan area apparently got the worst of it, because it was on the dangerous northeastern wall of the storm.

"We are looking at the highest storm surges ever recorded" in the Northeast, said Jeff Masters, meteorology director for Weather Underground, a private forecasting service. "The energy of the storm surge is off the charts, basically."

Hours before landfall, there was graphic evidence of the storm's power.

Off North Carolina, a replica of the 18th-century sailing ship HMS Bounty that was built for the 1962 Marlon Brando movie "Mutiny on the Bounty" went down in the storm, and 14 crew members were rescued by helicopter from rubber lifeboats bobbing in 18-foot seas. Another crew member was found hours afterward but was later pronounced dead at a hospital. The captain was missing.

At Cape May, water sloshed over the seawall, and it punched through dunes in other seaside communities.

"When I think about how much water is already in the streets, and how much more is going to come with high tide tonight, this is going to be devastating," said Bob McDevitt, president of the main Atlantic City casino workers union. "I think this is going to be a really bad situation tonight."

In Maryland, at least 100 feet of a fishing pier at the beach resort of Ocean City was destroyed.

At least half a million people along the East Coast had been ordered to evacuate, including 375,000 from low-lying parts of New York City.

Sheila Gladden left her home in Philadelphia's flood-prone Eastwick neighborhood, which took on 5? feet of water during Hurricane Floyd in 1999, and headed for a hotel.

"I'm not going through this again," she said.

Those who stayed behind had few ways to get out.

Not only was the New York subway shut down, but the Holland Tunnel connecting New York to New Jersey was closed, as was a tunnel between Brooklyn and Manhattan. The Brooklyn Bridge, the George Washington Bridge, the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge and several other spans were closed because of high winds.

Sandy snarls flights: What you should know if you're traveling

7 hrs.

If you had to define a travel nightmare, this would be it: Thousands of flights canceled, train service halted, public transit on pause and countless travelers going nowhere fast as Hurricane Sandy menaces the East Coast.

?There are travel messes and then there are travel messes,? said Rick Seaney, CEO of FareCompare.com.

?You have things like the Icelandic volcano, for example, which was only (affecting) trans-Atlantic traffic. This is bigger because it?s both trans-Atlantic and Eastern seaboard. The Eastern seaboard controls sort of the nation,?so it trickles down throughout the nation. Even if you?re flying on the West Coast you could be delayed because of what?s going on.?

Deteriorating weather conditions forced airlines to cancel nearly 14,000 flights through Tuesday, and that number is expected to grow, according to Jackie Butcher, a spokesperson for FlightAware.com.?Philadelphia International was most affected on Monday with 1,259 cancellations, followed by the three major New York City-area airports.

John F. Kennedy International, Newark Liberty International and LaGuardia remained open on Monday, but the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey discouraged travelers from even trying to get to the airports. The agency also began setting up cots for stranded passengers and placed sandbags at Newark Liberty. Photos showed flood waters from Hurricane Sandy approaching LaGuardia runways and taxiways on Monday afternoon.

The ripple effects are being felt across the country and even the world, as travelers trying to fly into the region to either get back home or make a connection are in limbo.?Even Capt. Chesley B. ?Sully? Sullenberger, the pilot made famous by the "Miracle on the Hudson" flight, tweeted that he was "stuck in PA" because of Sandy on Monday afternoon.

Hailey Walmsley was scheduled to return to Boston after attending a wedding in Atlanta, but she is stuck at the city?s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport ? often dubbed ?Hotel Hartsfield? when travelers in transit have nowhere to go???and told she won?t be able to fly out until Thursday.

?My flight was actually canceled twice,? she told Atlanta's?NBC?affiliate WXIA. ?So now it?s just kind of up in the air.?

In Denver, where about 50 flights to the East Coast were canceled, Steve Houston was trying to get home to Belfast, Ireland.

"My biggest concern was that I would leave Denver, get to New York, and then get stranded in New York and be sitting there in the middle of the hurricane," Houston told Denver's?NBC?affiliate KUSA.

JetBlue closed its New York City operations Sunday night and proactively canceled more than 1,000 flights through Wednesday morning, said airline?spokeswoman Sharon Jones.

?High winds are no bueno for flying machines, so we are sheltering our aircraft in other cities,? the airline said on its blog.

American Airlines suspended operations Sunday night until Wednesday at nine airports in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, including Ronald Reagan Washington National, Dulles International, Baltimore/Washington International, Norfolk International, Philadelphia International, Newark Liberty International, John F. Kennedy International, LaGuardia and Bradley International.

?First flights into?these cities will resume Wednesday. First flights out of these cities will take place after noon on Wednesday,? said spokesman Kent Powell.

Delta Air Lines, which has cancelled about 2,500 flights, expects to resume limited operations at its LaGuardia and JFK hubs on Tuesday afternoon, with a full restart targeted for Wednesday. Operations at other East Coast airports are expected to resume by mid-morning Tuesday. ?

Still, the good news is that the storm is hitting during a relatively slow travel period, FareCompare.com's?Seaney said. Airlines also had plenty of notice to move planes to safer grounds and pre-cancel flights, he added.

?They?ll be able to unwind (the backlog) in a day or two completely as long as there?s no major damage to airports,? Seaney said.

Related: Hurricane Sandy, by the numbers

All airlines now have hurricane-related travel waiver policies in effect, allowing passengers to change their reservations without a fee.

If you bought tickets through sites such as Expedia, Travelocity and Orbitz,?call those companies and have them rebook, instead of calling airlines directly, because the carriers? phone lines may be jammed as everyone scrambles to change plans, advised?Airfarewatchdog.com founder?George Hobica.

Also keep in mind that if you are stuck at the airport, hurricanes are considered a "force majeure" event or an "act of God" by the airlines, which means that cancellations are viewed as out of the airlines' control and the only thing travelers are entitled to is a refund, Hobica said. In other words, you may not get a hotel voucher.

Here are some more tips if you have to fly into or out of the region this week:

  • Sign up for alerts from your airlines and follow them on Twitter to get the latest information on your flights;
  • Monitor the FAA?s flight information map for any airport delays or closures;
  • Have items like medications, your hotel and airline phone numbers, a change of clothes and toiletries with you, Hobica advised. If they're kept in checked luggage and you're stranded, you're most likely out of luck;

  • For United travel waivers, click here;
  • For Delta travel waivers, click here;

Air travel isn't the only mode of transportation impacted by Hurricane Sandy. Amtrak cancelled nearly all service on the eastern seaboard on Monday, and public transit was suspended in New York City, Philadelphia and Baltimore.

It?s not a good time to be a tourist either. In New York, the Statue of Liberty crown reopened to the public on Sunday, but the monument will be closed Monday and Tuesday because of the storm. All Broadway and off-Broadway shows have been canceled for Monday.?

Giants sweep Tigers for World Series title

DETROIT ? The end came much like this series, not with a boom, but with a little fly ball that fell through the 10th inning raindrops and onto the Comerica Park outfield grass for a single that would win the San Francisco Giants the 2012 World Series.

In a series where new heroes come nightly and from a roster of anonymous names, the star would be second baseman Marco Scutaro, whose fly ball fell in front of Detroit Tigers center fielder Austin Jackson. It scored journeyman infielder Ryan Theriot, who slid across home plate for what would be the winning run in a 4-3 victory in Game 4 on Sunday night.

San Francisco's Pablo Sandoval was named the World Series MVP. (AP)San Francisco's Pablo Sandoval was named the World Series MVP. (AP)And after closer Sergio Romo struck out Miguel Cabrera for the final out, the Giants raced to the center of the infield to celebrate their second World Series championship in three years. It's the franchise's seventh world title.

Pablo Sandoval was voted World Series MVP after batting 8 for 16 in four games, doing most of his damage in Game 1 with a historic three home run performance.

"My mom sent me a text and said don't wake up," Sandoval said of his dream-come-true World Series.

As for the other big hitter entering this series, it was fitting that Cabrera was the final out Sunday. After all, it was the failure of Detroit's big hitters, primarily Cabrera and Prince Fielder, that led to the Tigers' demise in this series. Their silence had as much to do with San Francisco's sweep as the Giants' resourcefulness.

In dispensing praise, Giants manager Bruce Bochy had a big helping for Romo, who seized the closer role in place of the injured Brian Wilson.

"Sergio, he's the guy you want out there. He's not afraid," Bochy said. "He saved us all year when we lost [Brian] Wilson."

Like they have in this World Series, the Giants scored first Sunday. Only unlike the other games, they couldn't hold onto the lead. Hunter Pence hit a fly ball in the second inning that rose high toward center field and carried over the heads of the outfielders before finally bouncing on the warning track and dropping over the fence for a double. The next hitter, Brandon Belt, hit a fly ball down the right-field line that smacked against the fence. By the time the Tigers got the ball back to the field Belt had a triple, Pence had scored and San Francisco was up 1-0.

The lead disappeared an inning later when Austin Jackson walked and two batters later Cabrera hit what appeared to be a routine fly ball to right field that got caught in the roaring wind and carried until it disappeared in the crowd for the Triple Crown winner's first home run of the World Series.

For Detroit, though, the problem was that pitcher Max Scherzer couldn't hold the 2-1 lead. In the top of the sixth he gave up a single to Scutaro and then two batters later he got a 1-0 changeup over the middle of the plate and Giants catcher Buster Posey pulled it down the left-field line. The ball curled just inside the foul pole for a home run that sent the San Francisco players running and jumping in their dugout.

The 3-2 lead lasted two batters into the bottom of the inning when Delmon Young hit a home run to right to tie the score 3-3, where the game would be stuck until Theriot and Scutaro won it in the 10th inning.

"It was freaky. I would've never guessed it," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said of his team's inglorious demise in a postgame TV interview. "There was nothing flukey about it."

How to Handle Hyperactivity in Kids with ADHD | World of Psychology

How to Handle Hyperactivity in Kids with ADHD Hyperactive kids with ADHD are always on the go, according to Roberto Olivardia, Ph.D, a clinical psychologist and clinical instructor in the department of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School. It?s like they have a motor winding them up. ?Words like ?Energizer Bunny,? ?Speedy Gonzalez? and the ?Roadrunner? are common nicknames to describe the?never-ending vessel of energy?ADHD kids exhibit,? he said.

For instance, rather than sitting at their desk, they might jump up several times to sharpen their pencil, said Ari Tuckman, PsyD, a clinical psychologist and author of Understand Your Brain, Get More Done: The ADHD Executive Functions Workbook. Rather than sitting at the dinner table, they might walk around it ? or go and play with the pet, he said.

Physical hyperactivity isn?t the only concern. Hyperactive kids also experience racing ? and ?rarely singular or linear? ? thoughts, Olivardia said. ?The idea of ?shutting their minds off? is a foreign concept to someone who is hyperactive.?

Because of their hyperactivity, kids with ADHD can have a hard time in school, where sitting still is nonnegotiable. ?[They] can miss much of what is taught simply because their brains are not as stimulated when they are still,? Olivardia said. (However, as he said, ?Perhaps the current setup of school, sitting still for 6 hours a day 5 days a week, is the real problem.?)

They also might experience social problems, he said. And hyperactivity ?can lead to more accidents and injuries if the child engages in reckless activities in order to get some of that energy out,? Tuckman said.

Handling Hyperactivity in Kids with ADHD

Parenting a child who?s hyperactive is no doubt exhausting. Tuckman and Olivardia shared these suggestions on how to handle hyperactivity.

Have a clear understanding of hyperactivity.

Being hyperactive is not the same as misbehaving, Olivardia said. Hyperactivity in ADHD is hardwired, he said. ?It is analogous to feeling an intense itch and not scratching it. Even if you don?t scratch it, you?ll be so distracted by wanting to.? In addition to educating yourself, educate your child as well about why they?re hyperactive, he added.

Find other ?fidgets.?

Fidgeting actually helps kids focus and reduce hyperactivity. Olivardia referred to a book called Fidget to Focus, which describes the science of fidgeting and its ability to sharpen attention. He also suggested finding other ways to fidget, such as chewing gum or having an object to manipulate.

Create more engagement.

For instance, teachers can set up desks in a circle or have ?stand-up desks,? Olivardia said. Kids with ADHD are usually more engaged when they?re moving around a bit than sitting still. Get creative, experiment and go with what works, he said.

Ignore the hyperactivity.

?Sometimes the best solution is just to ignore it,? Tuckman said. For instance, when your child is having dinner at home, if they?re eating their food and not misbehaving, let them stand or walk around the table, he said.

Get rid of excess energy.

?You can burn off some of that hyperactivity by allowing the child to be more active before they need to sit still,? Tuckman said.

The important thing is not to fight hyperactivity by telling your child to stop fidgeting, be still or stay seated, Tuckman said. In fact, ?Simply saying ?Sit still? can be invalidating and lead to self-esteem problems in kids with ADHD,? Olivardia said. Instead, help your child channel their excess energy, Tuckman said.

Also, ?Remember that this same kind of energy, which can be a lot to handle as a parent or teacher when kids are younger, is the same kind of energy that can contribute to amazing things as an adult,? Olivardia said. Many entrepreneurs were diagnosed with ADHD as kids, and today, use their energy to brainstorm exciting ideas and run out-of-the-box businesses, he said.

49ers leading Cardinals 24-3 after 3 quarters

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) ? Alex Smith threw two of his three touchdown passes to Michael Crabtree and San Francisco stifled Arizona's offense, giving the 49ers a 24-3 lead over the Cardinals after three quarters Monday night.

San Francisco had its way with Arizona's defense, helped by some shoddy tackling by the Cardinals.

The 49ers moved 77 plays in 10 yards on their second drive, capped by a 3-yard touchdown pass from Smith to Crabtree, who grabbed the ball above the head of cornerback Patrick Peterson for the score.

David Akers added a 43-yard field goal in the second quarter and Smith found Crabtree again with just under 2 minutes left, this time on a 9-yard pass after Arizona's defenders lost track of the San Francisco receiver.

The 49ers scored on their opening possession of the third quarter, too, when Randy Moss darted and dashed through Arizona's flailing defenders for a 47-yard touchdown pass that put San Francisco up 24-0.

Smith hit 17 of 18 passes for 233 yards the first three quarters, his only incompletion a dropped pass by Delanie Walker.

Arizona got off to a good start while trying to end a three-game losing streak, with running back LaRod Stephens-Howling breaking free for a 24-yard reception on a screen pass in the Cardinals' first play. But, like so many Cardinals drives this season, the progress fizzled out and ended when John Skelton threw a pass that was nearly intercepted.

Arizona's second drive was even worse: three and out with a false-start penalty, minus-7 yards.

The Cardinals had 22 yards in the first quarter and were only marginally better in the second, finishing the first half with 69 yards. Skelton's up-for-grabs pass at the end of the half was intercepted, setting off a chorus of boos from the hometown fans.

Arizona finally moved the ball late in the third quarter, setting up a 28-yard field goal by Jay Feely that had the crowd booing again.

Skelton was 21 for 33 with 194 yards through three quarters.

Arizona's struggles were no surprise; Monday nights have been a horror show for the Cardinals since moving to the desert in 1988.

Arizona has lost seven of eight under the spotlight and two of those were memorably ugly for what happened after the game.

In 2006, Cardinals' coach Dennis Green had one of the NFL's biggest meltdowns, shouting "They are who we thought they were!" during his postgame news conference after a loss to the Bears.

Arizona quarterback Derek Anderson did his best Green imitation in 2010, when he shouted "Nothing's funny to me!" after a reporter repeatedly asked him why he was smiling during the closing seconds of blowout loss to the 49ers ? Arizona's last game on Monday Night Football.

On the field, this NFC West showdown figured to be a physical beatdown.

For one, these two teams don't like each other much, trading insults before the games, blows once they started.

They also have two of the NFL's best defenses, aggressive units that try to knock opponents senseless.

The 49ers came in with the league's best defense, a punch-you-in-the-mouth group led by a dominating front seven that includes three All-Pros: defensive tackle Justin Smith and linebackers Patrick Willis and NaVorro Bowman.

San Francisco entered Monday night's game tied with Chicago for the NFL's best scoring defense, allowing 14.3 points per game, and has held three teams to 115 yards passing or less.

Arizona has the NFL's seventh overall defense and is third in scoring at 16.9 points per game. The Cardinals have been an opportunistic bunch, too, creating 15 turnovers the first seven games.

Arizona got the first good lick against San Francisco in the first quarter, when cornerback Patrick Peterson laid out 49ers receiver Mario Manningham on a screen pass.

The 49ers pushed right back, rolling over the Cardinals' defense while their defense stuffed one of the NFL's worst offenses, holding Arizona to four first downs and 6 yards rushing in the first half.

Pandora?s New iOS And Android Apps Get The Facebook Treatment: Listening Timelines, Activity Feeds And Social Sharing Features To Do Battle With Spotify (And Perhaps Apple)

pandoraPandora is one of the older and more established internet radio services out there, with 150 million registered users, 58.3 million active listeners and 115 million registered users on mobile. Now, with a lot of competition crowding its space from Spotify, (possibly) Apple, I Heart Radio and more, Pandora is looking to that mobile base for growth. Today, it is releasing new apps for iOS and Android devices with extensive social features, improved navigation and deeper integration with Pandora?s music and artist database.

The Importance of a Well Defined Data Recovery Policy? - QeH2

By admin - October 29, 2012

Data Recovery DenverIn its simplest form, data recovery can be defined as the process of redeeming lost data off a corrupted or damaged storage device ? be it a USB flash drive or the hard drive. Typically, unless you are terribly running out of luck, a hard drive tends to last for several years without troubling you much. However, aging is not the only factor that adversely affects the performance of your hard drive, there are many others too: from malware to a power surge and what not. In an era when almost every single aspect of an organization?s operational structure are increasingly becoming reliant on digital technology, can you really afford to take the risk of not having a back up plan in case something goes wrong with your digital assets. For any business using computers (today there are hardly any that doesn?t) for their day to day operations, even a single corrupt or damaged system (read: hard drive) could lead to potentially disastrous consequences, unless of course they have a practical and effective data recovery policy in place.

Data recovery is the kind of fail-safe measure that, if planned and executed correctly, could get you rid of the anxiety of losing your valuable digital data. After all, data can never automatically wipe out itself- even when the storage device is terribly damaged. Up to a certain point (let?s say when you have not had your hard drive crushed to dust by a bulldozer), there is always the possibility of reviving its content with the help of right tools and/or professionals. Thus often companies tend to give data recovery contracts to their outsourced IT support team.

A data recovery policy does not have to be an uni-dimensional approach, meaning you can have a multi-layered fail-safe policy in place for an unexpected? digital catastrophe. Backing up your data, and thus sparing yourself from the risk of data loss should be the first level of any data recovery policy. While taking the help of an outsourced IT support team is preferred, you can do it yourself- without any professional help. Just store additional copies of your important data in multiple places like flash drive or optical discs (DVDs etc), so if your hard drive fails some day you can easily restore its content without experiencing a panic attack. Alternatively, you can also create backup copies of your essential data in the cloud. There are plenty of offsite backup Denver services whom you can safely turn to if your on premise systems suffer any damage. By opting for the cloud back up option,? you can retrieve your lost data easily over the web. However, its understandable that its not always possible (at least not feasible) to backup all your data. Hence, someday you might have to face a scenario when, even after having a data backup strategy in place, you will have certain amount of data due to technical failure or human error. This is when you can ask for help from a professional IT service Denver that specializes in a data recovery policy.

Birding ? It's as close as your backyard | Life And Leisure NJ

Unlike most hobbies, backyard birding doesn?t cost a lot, doesn?t take tons of equipment, and doesn?t require that you decipher complicated instructions just to get started. All you need is a backyard or a balcony.

It?s no wonder so many Americans ? more than 60 million ? are interested in birding. Learning about birds is great exercise for your brain too. Imagine: there are more than 60 kinds of warblers, and that?s just in North America. Whether you live on the West Coast or the East Coast, there are dozens of species you can observe ? if you have the right drawing cards.

But be prepared: the birds in your neighborhood, from Western bluebirds to Red-Eyed Vireos, can capture your interest and turn you into a binocular-wielding birder in no time.

Many birds are accustomed to living near people, so you?ve no doubt glimpsed several species right near your home. And that?s without making any effort. But every bird loves an invitation, even those that are just flying by. Entice more of them into your yard with just a few changes.

Make some new feathered friends

First, try putting up a bird feeder. Most bird feeders attract a variety of birds, and you?ll love seeing them flit past your windows. To get started, watch this video on birding basics. Next, choose the kind of birdseed that will attract a lot of birds. Black oil sunflower seeds, which you can pick up just about anywhere, work well. Depending on where you live, you?ll have cardinals, chickadees and maybe even some showy goldfinches stopping by for a quick snack.

Get a bird guidebook or a smartphone app. You?ll be amazed at how easy it is to identify dozens of visitors to your yard in just a few weeks. There are more than 1,000 species of birds in the United States, but bird guides can steer you toward those you?re most likely to see in your region.

Offer amenities ? edible berries, bird baths and waterers

Think about growing some plants and flowers that attract birds. Trees and shrubs can provide shelter from predators and great places for nests. Likewise, Juneberries and dogwoods offer edible treats for many species and attract insects that birds like to eat. To attract a particular species, learn what they like: bee balm and trumpet creeper vines, for instance, are great draws for hummingbirds.

Bird baths offer clean drinking water and a chance to have a good overall rinse. By bathing, birds keep their feathers clean and flexible. Just be sure to clean your bird bath regularly; knowing that they will find a healthy drinking source they can also bathe in will keep your feathered buddies coming back again and again. Or, offer them a waterer. Birds can access clean drinking water the same way they access birdseed, with the new line of Perky-Pet bird waterers.

Look into putting up a birdhouse. Most birdhouses are designed for a specific type of bird, so do a little research and then put out the ?vacancy? sign. Chances are, it will be quickly filled.

Finally, get out your camera ? preferably with a zoom lens. Or just enjoy the view through binoculars. Seeing these birds up close can be a real thrill, especially once you begin to recognize details, like a tuft on the head or a split tail. To bring birds even closer, consider a window feeder from Perky-Pet. Bird watching is safe and fun even up close.

Saskatoon real estate week in review: October 21-27, 2012 ...

Posted by Norm Fisher on October 27, 2012

Saskatoon real estate sales came back from what felt like a brutal slide last week as local agents reported 77 firm house and condo deals to the multiple listing service?. That?s a gain of 24 sales compared to last week, up just one from the same week a year ago. New MLS? listings continued to cool. Just 99 properties were added to the system. That?s the smallest number of new Saskatoon real estate listings since January. Those numbers were lower than last week by 17 but ahead of the same week last year by five.

Click the image for a larger version of the graph.

Residential real estate inventory on the Saskatoon multiple listing service? slipped lower this week to 1168. While that number is down just 24 properties from levels seen a week ago it is the lowest number of listings available since May. This week?s final number comes in with about 47 fewer properties available than we could find on the system at the same point in 2011. Today, buyers can find 702 single-family homes and 377 condos on the MLS?. Last year at this time we had 747 single-family homes and 394 condominiums showing an active status.

Click the image for a larger version of the graph.

Prices didn?t see much change this week by any of the measures we track except the weekly median price which slipped lower by more than eighteen thousand dollars to $301,500. In spite of an unusually low count of Saskatoon home sales above the $500,000 mark, the weekly average sale price fell just six thousand dollars to $320,311. Meanwhile, the six-week average sale price remained steady on a weekly basis at $326,521 which is actually lower than it was a year ago by a few hundred dollars. This would be the first week this year where the six-week average price has slipped lower on an annual basis. At the same time, the four-week median sale price managed to inch up by one thousand dollars this week to $321,000 to claim an annual gain of roughly eleven thousand dollars.

Click the image for a larger version of the graph.

For the second week in a row, overbid sales were a complete non-factor. Ten lucky Saskatoon home sellers did manage to obtain a full price offers to wrap up a deal on their home while 67 of this week?s 77 sales were reported to have sold below the asking price by an average of $8,843.

Other notable MLS? activity this week included 46 cancelled and withdrawn listings, 8 expired listings and 32 price adjustments.

October storm scrambles presidential contest

LAND O'LAKES, Fla. (AP) ? Scrambling to avoid the superstorm that threatens to disrupt the lives of millions of Americans up and down the East Coast, Republican Mitt Romney is returning to battleground Ohio to fight for momentum nine days before the election.

The GOP presidential candidate had planned to campaign Sunday in Virginia, but will instead join running mate Paul Ryan in the Buckeye State. The weather also forced President Barack Obama to shift his campaign schedule.

The storm presents both sides with a most unlikely October surprise as polls show an extraordinarily tight race. Hurricane Sandy had each campaign discarding carefully mapped-out itineraries as they worked to maximize voter turnout while avoiding any suggestion they were putting politics ahead of public safety.

On Saturday, Romney spoke of bipartisanship before early voters in Florida, while Obama worked to nail down tiny New Hampshire's four electoral votes.

The former Massachusetts governor, who presented himself as a staunch conservative during the Republican primaries but has been striking a more moderate tone as he courts women and independent voters in the campaign's home stretch, campaigned across Florida. He promised to "build bridges" with Democrats.

Romney coupled his message with digs at the president for "shrinking from the magnitude of the times" and advancing an agenda that lacks vision.

Obama, who planned to travel to Florida Sunday night, took his campaign to New Hampshire. He told volunteers Saturday at a Teamsters hall in Manchester that: "We don't know how this thing is going to play out. These four electoral voters right here could make all the difference."

Winning the White House takes 270 electoral votes. Obama is ahead in states and the District of Columbia representing 237 electoral votes; Romney has a comfortable lead in states with 191 electoral votes. The rest lie in nine contested states that remain too close to call.

The president adjusted his campaign speech at a Nashua rally to appeal to voters in low-tax New Hampshire, hammering Romney for raising taxes and fees as governor of neighboring Massachusetts.

Obama accused Romney of running in Massachusetts on a pledge to lower taxes, then making life more expensive for the middle class after taking office.

"All he's offering is a big rerun of the same policies," Obama told a crowd of 8,500 gathered at an outdoor rally on an unseasonably warm October day.

The candidates worked to lock down every possible early vote without intruding on emergency preparations as the storm's expected track looked to affect at least four battleground states: North Carolina, Virginia, Ohio and New Hampshire.

Obama canceled appearances in Prince William County, Va., on Monday, and Colorado Springs, Colo., on Tuesday so he could monitor Hurricane Sandy as it surges ashore. He did move up his planned Monday departure for Florida to Sunday night to beat the storm and planned a Monday stop in Youngstown, Ohio, before returning home to Washington.

Instead of campaigning in Virginia as scheduled, Romney on Sunday joins Ryan for three stops of his Ohio bus tour.

Vice President Joe Biden canceled a Saturday rally in coastal Virginia Beach, Va., to allow local officials there to focus on disaster preparedness and local security concerns. But he went ahead with an appearance in Lynchburg, which is inland.

Biden said Romney and Ryan are fleeing from their record to appear more moderate than they are. They "are counting on the American people to have an overwhelming case of amnesia."

En route to New Hampshire, Obama held an airborne conference call with administration officials about the federal government's role in minimizing storm damage and ensuring a speedy recovery effort.

Romney's trip to Florida, with three events across the state, was timed to coincide with the first day of in-person early voting in a state where 29 electoral votes are up for grabs.
