Make Your Business Profitable Using Online Marketing ? Social ...

If you are setting up a business, you must learn all of the different advantages you can get by using web marketing. One reason this is very effective is because there is the potential to connect online with many people daily. Regular marketing solutions don't offer you this opportunity. Your advertising can be seen by individuals worldwide when you use the Internet. You can see why this kind of advertising would be better than any other kind of advertising.

When you consider how costly it can be to rent a billboard or hire telemarketers, online marketing really doesn't cost a lot. A number of internet marketing methods are costly but since many methods are actually rather inexpensive, this type of advertising is preferred by many. Normally, the average business does not have the funding for banner advertising on a top site, but many cheaper options are also available. Pay-per-click marketing, a kind of search engine marketing, is a really preferential kind of internet marketing. Internet marketing is fast and effective, which is another big advantage.

With conventional types of advertising, it takes quite some time to be ready, but online it can happen in just a few seconds or minutes. It can take approximately 7 days to place an offline newspaper advert, yet you can do it instantly on the internet. Online marketing is definitely quick and cheap, but its effectiveness is what truly makes it worthwhile. There are many people online and the vast majority of them trust online advertisements, so you'll have a lot of potential customers within your reach. You're trying to connect with the most people you're able to who are part of your target audience. You are attempting to connect with those who want what you have for sale through the use of online marketing.

You can reach thousands of people anytime you want to by using email marketing. This is more effective when you have personally recruited the list members but there's nothing wrong with acquiring or renting someone else's list. These may not work nicely for you. When you first begin marketing online, it is recommended by knowledgeable marketers that you right away begin setting up an email list of your own. Having a website for your business is another effective way to increase your client base. If you want to be visible on the internet, you will require appealing, effective design combined with the best search engine optimization techniques. If you've got way too many keywords, you might get banned by the search engines for spamming.

Using internet marketing for site advertising can be quite advantageous. There are many ways for you to reach around the world to advertise your product. It could take you a little while to learn everything about online marketing, but if you have a business you want to make financially rewarding, it is the path to take.

I am a Online Marketing Professional that has been employed in the industry for the past 23 months.

(AP Photo/Jacquelyn Martin, File)

(AP) ? Secretary of State John Kerry is embarking on his first official overseas voyage, bringing new ideas to capitals in Europe and the Middle East on how to end nearly two years of brutal violence in Syria.

Kerry leaves Washington on Sunday on a grueling nine-nation, 10-day trip that will bring him to America's traditional western European allies of Britain, Germany, France and Italy along with Turkey, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar. In addition to Syria, he will focus on conflicts in Mali and Afghanistan and Iran's nuclear program.

Kerry has said he is eager to discuss new ways of convincing Syrian President Bashar Assad to step down and usher in a democratic transition in the country that has been wracked by increasing violence that has killed at least 70,000 people. He has not offered details of his ideas but officials say they revolve around increasing pressure on Assad and his inner circle.

Kerry begins his trip in London where he will see senior British officials on a range of issues, from Afghanistan to the status of the Falkland Islands, over which Britain is in a major dispute with Argentina.

He then travels to Germany to discuss trans-Atlantic issues with German youth in Berlin, where he spent time as a child as the son of an American diplomat posted to the divided Cold War city. He will also meet with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in the German capital.

In Paris, Kerry will discuss France's ongoing intervention in Mali. And in Rome, he'll attend a meeting with Syrian opposition leaders.

U.S. officials have said the trip will be primarily a "listening tour" when it comes to Syria and won't result in immediate shifts in U.S. policy that has until now stayed clear of military support for the rebels fighting Assad.

Despite the numerous Middle East stops. Kerry will not travel to Israel or the Palestinian territories. He will wait to visit them when he accompanies President Barack Obama there in March.

Mathieu: Honesty?is 'best friend'

WernerAP

It?s late February.? The Combine is unfolding.? And that means it?s time for scouts to rip or praise players under the cloak of anonymity.

Plenty of writers who publish assessments made by unnamed scouts are now ridiculed when doing so.? The pedigree and accomplishments of Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel tend to insulate him from scrutiny, even when his unnamed scouts swing and miss on players like Robert Griffin III.? (Heck, McGinn can even publish Wonderlic numbers without being vilified.)

McGinn assesses the players who could be available when the Packers use their first-round pick, and he shares the insights of a pair of unnamed scouts regarding Florida State defensive end Bjoern Werner, a German-born-and-bred prospect who is now poised to fulfill the very unlikely dream of being a first-round draft pick in the NFL.

?He?s good, but I don?t see the special in him,? one unnamed scout said. ?Kind of a try-hard, good football player but nothing special.?

Said another:? ?He?s not a dynamic pass rusher but he seems to get sacks.? He comes off the ball hard but he?s not special.?

Without knowing anything about the team(s) for which these scouts work, there?s no way of knowing whether they?re badmouthing Werner in the hopes that he?ll be available when their team(s) pick.? That?s how it works.? Teams that love a player say bad things about him, wishing for a free fall.? Teams that hate a guy say great things about him, hopeful he?ll be taken early ? pushing down the board players in which the team is actually interested.

With more and more media swarming around the pre-draft process, there?s always someone ready to publish these anonymous assessments.

But citing an ?unnamed scout? tells the audience nothing about the skills or credentials of the scout.? As the late George Carlin used to say (as Carlin himself would say, he?s saying nothing now), there?s a worst doctor in the world ? and someone has an appointment with him tomorrow.? Similarly, there are plenty of scouts who aren?t as skilled as others.? Any time an unnamed scout is being quoted, there?s a chance that he?s the worst of them all.

You know, like the ones who told McGinn last year that, as to RG3, ?[e]verybody is just assuming because of the Heisman and the socks and all that bs. . . . they are ignoring a lot of bad tape that he?s had,? that ?I don?t think he has vision or pocket feel, which to me are the two most important components of quarterbacking,? that ?[h]e?s just running around winging it,? that ?[h]e?s [Michael] Vick, but not as good a thrower,? that ?he?s not as good as Cam Newton,? that ?[a]s much as is written about his athleticism, his athleticism under duress in the pocket isn?t even close to Cam Newton?s,? that ?the only way he gets big plays with his feet is if he?s got a wide-open field and the sea opens for him,? that ?[h]e?s got a little bit of a selfish streak, too,? and that ?[h]e doesn?t treat anybody good.?

Or maybe these unnamed scouts are just good enough to know how to push lies in the hopes of advancing agendas.

Poll from GOP-leaning firms shows McConnell with 9-point lead over Judd

Polling data released Wednesday showed U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell as a nine point favorite to start his re-election bid.

The survey conducted by RunSwitch Public Relations in conjunction with conservative polling firm Harper Polling shows McConnell leading rumored potential Democratic Senate candidate, actress Ashley Judd.

In a hypothetical head-to-head test, McConnell would get 49 percent to Judd?s 40 percent in the survey of 850 likely Kentucky voters. It had a margin of error of 3.36 points, according to the polling memo.

McConnell and Judd tied when it comes to support of women voters, each receiving 44 percent.

Scott Jennings, co-founder of RunSwitch, cites the SuperPAC ad mocking Judd was found to be effective when polling about Judd not currently being a Kentucky resident and being referred to as a ?radical?.

The firm said in the statement it will release more results from the survey on Thursday.

No. 1 Indiana holds off Nebraska 76-47

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) ? Indiana spent the first 15 minutes Wednesday night contending with Nebraska's deliberate style.

The Hoosiers spent the final 25 decimating it.

Cody Zeller fought through foul trouble to score 16 points, Christian Watford finished with 13 points and 11 rebounds and No. 1 Indiana eventually pulled away from the Cornhuskers for a resounding 76-47 victory.

"We're not trying to set records, we're trying to win a national championship," coach Tom Crean said. "But at the end of the day, if you want to win big, you have to play a lot of different ways, and our guys did that and they stayed true to the game plan."

Indiana certainly played like it wanted to stay atop the polls for a third straight week after getting a reprieve last week when all of the top five teams lost. If the Hoosiers beat Purdue again Saturday, there may not be much of a debate about who's No. 1.

To players, Wednesday night's game felt like two in one.

The first was frustrating as Nebraska repeatedly ran the shot clock inside of 10 seconds and refused to let Indiana speed up the pace. But the Hoosiers refused to crack under the pressure by taking care of the ball and waiting patiently for a chance to make their move.

When they got the opening, the Hoosiers quickly reverted to form and seized control as the defense clamped down, the shooters warmed up, and instead of folding when Zeller went to the bench with two fouls midway through the first half, they surged.

Nebraska simply couldn't keep up.

"They do pack the lane and when everybody started to knock down open shots that started to open the floor for everybody. I think that is what we have to do," Hoosiers guard Maurice Creek said. "When the lane is packed, people have got to knock down 3s, mid-range pull-ups, to open it up for the post players. When it's clogged on our side, then the post players have to do their work and they did tonight. They did a good job."

Indiana (22-3, 10-2 Big Ten) has won seven of its last eight, rejoined Michigan State atop the league standings and is one win away from retaining the No. 1 spot for a third straight week.

After watching this game, Nebraska coach Tim Miles is convinced the Hoosiers belong there.

Zeller had 13 points in the second half and still finished as Indiana's top scorer despite playing a season-low 18 minutes. Watford made all six of his free throws and finished with another double-double. Victor Oladipo had 13 points and eight rebounds, and the Hoosiers were 8 of 16 from 3-point range, 6 of 9 in the second half.

They also held the Cornhuskers (12-13, 3-9) to 36.2 percent from the field and allowed only one player, Dylan Talley, to reach double figures. Talley finished with 16 points, 10 in the first half.

Nebraska has lost three of its last four and has lost 11 straight against No. 1 teams, dating to an upset of Missouri on Feb. 6, 1982.

"I thought it was transition more than anything," coach Tim Miles said of the Hoosiers' outside shooting over the final 20 minutes. "I just thought we couldn't quite get to everybody. I thought they had two or three (3-pointers) in transition that if you can't get back and line up your defense against these guys, you're really in trouble."

The Hoosiers made sure of it this time.

Nebraska made its first four shots and led for almost the entire first 12 minutes. But when Zeller departed, things changed. Indiana sped up the game, forcing Nebraska into 10 first-half turnovers.

And then the shots started falling. Will Sheehey got the first spurt started with a layup to trim Nebraska's lead to 14-13. Kevin "Yogi" Ferrell followed that with a 3-pointer to give Indiana its first lead with 8:05 left in the half. Oladipo hit another 3, and Jordan Hulls capped the 10-0 run with another layup to make it 21-14.

Nebraska came right back with four straight points, but the Hoosiers finished the half with six straight free throws to make it 27-18 and finished off the Cornhuskers quickly in the second half.

Zeller started the next run with a spectacular block. His teammates responded with six straight points, forcing Nebraska to call time out. And Indiana closed it out with a 19-4 run midway through the second half that made it 58-32 with 7:40 to go.

Nebraska never got close again.

"I think that's just the growth of older guys having a better understanding," Crean said when asked about the Hoosiers' patience. "We have 27 at the half but yet we end up with 76 and win by 29. That's really good."

What green algae are up to in the dark

Feb. 14, 2013 ? How green algae produce hydrogen in the dark is reported by biologists at the Ruhr-Universit?t Bochum in the Journal of Biological Chemistry. Biologists have uncovered a mechanism for the production of the gas which has not been examined in depth before; as researchers are mostly interested in light-driven hydrogen synthesis.

"Hydrogen could help us out of the energy crisis," says Prof. Dr. Thomas Happe, head of the working group Photobiotechnology. "If you want to make green algae produce more hydrogen, it is important to understand all the production pathways."

Green algae produce hydrogen under stress -- even in the dark

Single-celled green algae of the type Chlamydomonas are microscopically small organisms: ten of them fit side by side on a human hair. In some ways, microalgae are not so very different from higher plants, such as trees. For example, they also perform photosynthesis. Unlike land plants, they can use light energy for the production of molecular hydrogen H2. "However, Chlamydomonas and co only form hydrogen under stress," says Thomas Happe. "The disposal of the energy-rich gas serves as a kind of overflow valve so that excess light energy does not damage the sensitive photosynthetic apparatus." Chlamydomonas can also produce hydrogen in the dark. Although this fact has been known for decades, H2 synthesis in the absence of light has barely been studied because much less of the gas is produced in the dark than in the light. Moreover, it is complicated to isolate large quantities of the key enzyme of the dark-reaction, the so-called pyruvate:ferredoxin oxidoreductase. The RUB researchers nevertheless tackled the project.

Hydrogen production in the dark mimicked in vitro

Happe's team reconstructed the core of the dark hydrogen production in vitro, thus demonstrating the underlying mechanism. In order to get to the proteins involved, the researchers had these produced by bacteria. First they introduced the corresponding genes of the green algae into the gut bacterium Escherichia coli, for example, the gene for the pyruvate:ferredoxin oxidoreductase. E. coli then produced the proteins according to this blueprint. Happe's team isolated them from the bacterial cells and examined them like a construction kit. In the test tube, the biologists analysed how different combinations of proteins interacted with each other under specific environmental conditions.

"Ancient enzyme" discovered

In so doing, they found out that, under stress in the dark, the algae switch to a metabolic pathway which is normally only found in bacteria or single-celled parasites. "Chlamydmonas has an evolutionarily ancient enzyme," explains Jens Noth from the working group Photobiotechnology. "With the help of vitamin B1 and iron atoms, it gains energy from the breakdown of sugars." This energy is then used by other green algal enzymes, the hydrogenases, to form hydrogen. The unicellular microalgae switch on this metabolic pathway when they suddenly encounter oxygen-free conditions in the dark. Because, like humans, the green algae need oxygen to breathe if they cannot draw their energy from sunlight. The formation of hydrogen in the dark helps the cells to survive these stress condition. "With this knowledge, we have now found another piece of the puzzle to get an accurate picture of H2 production in Chlamydomonas," says Thomas Happe. "In future, this could also help to increase the biotechnologically relevant light-dependent H2 formation rate."

Raspbmc 1.0 brings stable media center duties to your Raspberry Pi

Raspberry Pi

After a year of effort the Raspbmc team announced it has reached the 1.0 milestone. This means the team is confident they've delivered a stable distro to run the port of XBMC specifically designed to run on the Raspberry Pi, created by TeamXBMC, and the image is ready to be downloaded for free and copied to your ready and able SD card. If you were already enjoying the fruits of the early builds of Raspbmc, you'll need to do a complete re-install but that shouldn't be too much trouble since you probably store your content on a network drive or external USB.

Raspbmc 1.0 is based on the recently finished XMBC 12 Final and supports DTS decoding in software. This is in addition to many other codecs supported in software and you can purchase licenses from the Raspberry Pi Store for MPEG-2 and VC-1 hardware decoding for just a few bucks. A good move, since hardware decoding of today's most popular video codecs is almost certainly a requirement for any proper XBMC setup. Now, if the Raspbmc team would release their own custom case for the RPi then everyone would know what's going on just by looking under your TV.

Tranferring your prescription may be bad for your health ...

(NOTE: This post is written by Beth Fields, Health Writer for Prescription Drug Transfer Programs. This is a quest post that is the opinion of the writer.)

No doubt you?ve seen those tempting promotions at pharmacies like CVS, Walgreens and Target, promising a gift card, coupon?sometimes even cash?if you transfer your prescriptions to them. It seems like a no-brainer. Surely Walgreens can do as good a job at filling your prescriptions as CVS can. And although that $25 reward may sound like a pretty good deal to a cash-strapped consumer, it could actually be a bad deal for their health.

A study of pharmacists published in the September issue of the Journal of the American Pharmaceutical Association shows that pharmacists perceive a reduction in the quality of care for patients transferring their prescriptions simply to reap those cash rewards. The pharmacists surveyed said patients that routinely use these incentives to save money might be at increased risk for inadequate drug screenings.

A busy pharmacist?and what pharmacist isn?t busy??could misread a medication name. Or a customer transferring a prescription for a generic medication who doesn?t recognize the name on the label could chalk it up to the new pharmacy substituting a different generic manufacturer and not see that actually, the prescription was not filled correctly.

Last July Ohio?s state board of pharmacy voted to fine or revoke the licenses of pharmacies that offered promotions encouraging prescription transfers. They also put an end to pharmacies guaranteeing how quickly a prescription will be ready. The changes came after the state surveyed its 5,700 licensed pharmacists. They got 1,800 responses, all concerned about working conditions that put patients at risk. ?Every time a pharmacist dispenses a prescription, they review the patient?s list of drugs to be sure there are no inconsistencies and that the new drug won?t interact with another,?Gary Schnable, executive director of the Oregon Pharmacy Board told The Oregonian newspaper. ?Every time a consumer switches pharmacies, it breaks that chain.?

Not only could it compromise the safety of medications?because they are filled in a rush, misread or misunderstood?it?s also illegal. Anyone whose prescriptions are subsidized by government programs like Medicare, Medicaid and Tricare (for military families) can?t accept the gift card (or coupons or other monetary reward). In fact last April Walgreens agreed to pay $7.9 million in a settlement it reached after allegations by the Department of Justice that the drugstore chain gave $25 gift cards to those enrolled in government-run health programs.

Now Walgreens may have gone so far in the other direction, it?s misleading consumers about its new prescription transfer program. A consumer in Massachusetts describing his experience on the consumer review site PissedConsumer.com, owned by market research firm Opinion Corp., said he switched six prescriptions from CVS to Walgreens?with the expectation of six $25 gift cards?and was told he didn?t qualify because he was enrolled in a government program. ?I have Blue Cross Blue Shield of Rhode Island,? he wrote, ?this is NOT a government program! However, Walgreens says it falls within the restrictions. How? If Blue Cross Blue Shield falls within this program, most plans will.? He also wasn?t told he didn?t qualify until after transferring the prescriptions.

If you still want to take advantage of prescription transfer programs, how can you make the most of them?

  • Read the fine print, say consumer spending experts. If there is paperwork involved or lengthy checkout lines, it might not be worth the wait.
  • Pick a chain store with locations near your home?within walking distance is ideal. Check the hours of the new pharmacy. Many bigger chains are open all night, but their in-store pharmacy may not run on that extended schedule.
  • And keep in mind that a $25 gift card may be a very attractive incentive?but it?s a one-time reward. Each refill will have to be done at that new pharmacy, which may not be as efficient or careful as your old one.

Most Americans Eager To Buy Seafood That's 'Sustainable'

Swordfish from Canada are marked with a label from the Marine Stewardship Council at a Whole Foods in Washington, D.C. The MSC says its label means the fish were caught by a sustainable fishery, but critics says it's not always so clear.

Margot Williams/NPR

Poll results from a recent survey of 3,000 Americans, conducted on behalf of NPR, by Truven Health Analytics. Questions were asked ? in general ? about sustainable seafood and labeling.

This week, our colleagues Daniel Zwerdling and Margot Williams with NPR's investigations unit have a terrific three-part series on the Marine Stewardship Council. As they report, the MSC's labels tell consumers which seafood is supposed to be good or bad for the environment. But some environmentalists say the label is misleading, and that the growing demand for sustainable-labeled seafood from retailers like Target and Whole Foods is pressuring the program to certify fisheries that don't deserve it.

As far as we could tell, no one had ever really asked regular consumers how they feel about seafood that's sustainably caught. So we teamed up with Zwerdling, Williams and Truven Health Analytics to find out. We asked 3,000 adults across the country about what the labels mean to them as part of an NPR-Truven Health Analytics Health Poll.

First, we learned that people's seafood consumption habits vary quite a bit. Roughly one in four respondents (24 percent) said they rarely or never eat seafood. But another 30 percent said they eat seafood at least four times a month.

The results from the poll showed that 80 percent of Americans who regularly eat fish say it is "important" or "very important" that the seafood they buy is caught using sustainable methods. ("Sustainable" was defined as still being plentiful for future generations, and caught using methods that did minimal harm to other animals in the sea.)

About 67 percent of respondents said they're "somewhat confident" in labels that call seafood "sustainable," while 20 percent don't believe them at all, and 14 percent said they're "very confident" in what labels suggest about how the seafood was caught.

Many are under the impression that wild-caught fish is better for them: Fifty-two percent of those surveyed told us they believe that wild-caught fish or seafood has more health benefits than other types of fish.

The poll also found that people not only support the idea of sustainable seafood ? they are also willing to pay more for it. About a quarter of respondents said they would pay up to 10 percent more, while 22 percent said they would fork over between 10 and 20 percent extra for products they believed were sustainably caught.

The nationwide telephone poll of 3,004 adults was conducted during the first half of August 2012. Click here to read the questions and complete results. For more polls from Truven Health Analytics ? formerly the health care business of Thomson Reuters ? and NPR, see our archive.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - What's most important to a man as he decides whether or not to undergo prostate-specific antigen- PSA- screening for prostate cancer? What does he value most about the screening? And what's the best way to present the information to help him make an appropriate decision for himself?

An international team of scientists led by the University of North Carolina has published a study evaluating different ways of helping men consider their values about PSA screening. They report that the decision-making process was influenced by the format in which information was presented.

Their results were reported in the Feb. 11, 2013 online edition of the journal JAMA Internal Medicine.

Michael Pignone, MD, MPH, study senior author, says, "Whether to undergo PSA screening is a difficult decision for middle-aged men. PSA screening at best seems to produce only a small reduction in prostate cancer deaths and has considerable downsides.

"Effective prostate cancer screening aids should promote understanding of the benefits and risks involved in deciding whether or not to be screened and should incorporate patient values. Our study evaluated different values clarification methods to determine if there is a difference in men's decision-making based on how they are asked to think about what factors matter to them. We found that there is a difference, and our findings pave the way for further studies."

Dr. Pignone is professor of medicine and chief of the division of general internal medicine, senior research fellow and co-director of the program on medical practice and prevention for the Cecil Sheps Center for Health Services Research, and a member of UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center.

The team described PSA screening decision options in terms of four key attributes: effect on prostate cancer mortality, risk of biopsy, risk of being diagnosed with prostate cancer and risk of becoming impotent or incontinent as a result of treatment.

These attributes were presented in three different formats. The balance sheet was a table of relevant features of PSA screening, and participants were asked to consider this information as they saw fit; in the second format, participants were asked to rate and rank the four attributes; in the third group, participants considered a series of hypothetical choices made up of different levels of these attributes.

The study involved 911 men ages 50 to 70 from the United States and Australia at average risk of developing prostate cancer. They were asked to complete questionnaires before and after value clarification.

Men who completed the balance sheet option where PSA screening versus no screening options were labeled most often chose the screening option: 43.7 percent. Men who completed the two unlabeled rate and rank and hypothetical choices surveys where the options were not labeled PSA screening or no screening were less likely to choose the screening option: 34.2 percent for the rate and rankings, 20.2 percent for the hypotheticals.

Dr. Pignone says, "What we learned was that how screening information is presented makes a difference in how men view the relative importance of different features of the decision. What this means is that more studies must be completed to determine the best method of value clarification around decision making for PSA screening."

Dark chocolate and red wine the food of love and health

Feb. 11, 2013 ? If you want to keep your true love's heart beating strong, Susan Ofria, clinical nutrition manager at Gottlieb Memorial Hospital, said the real food of love is dark chocolate and red wine. In moderation, red wine and dark chocolate are good health choices not just on Valentine's Day, but for any occasion.

"You are not even choosing between the lesser of two evils, red wine and dark chocolate have positive components that are actually good for your heart," said Ofria, a registered dietitian at the Loyola University Health System's Melrose Park campus.

Red wine and dark chocolate with a cocoa content of 70 percent or higher contain resveratrol, which has been found to lower blood sugar. Red wine is also a source of catechins, which could help improve "good" HDL cholesterol.

Ofria, who is also a nutrition educator, recommends the following list of heart-healthy ingredients for February, which is national heart month, and for good heart health all year.

Eight Ways to Say "I Love You" From Loyola Dietitian

Red Wine -- "Pinots, shirahs, merlots -- all red wines are a good source of catechins and resveratrol to aid 'good' cholesterol."

Dark chocolate, 70 percent or higher cocoa content -- "Truffles, souffl?s and even hot chocolate can be a good source of resveratrol and cocoa phenols (flavonoids) as long as dark chocolate with a high content of cocoa is used."

Salmon/tuna -- "Especially white, or albacore, tuna and salmon are excellent sources of omega-3 fatty acids, and canned salmon contains soft bones that give an added boost of calcium intake."

Flaxseeds -- "Choose either brown or golden yellow, and have them ground for a good source of omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, phytoestrogens."

Oatmeal -- "Cooked for a breakfast porridge or used in breads or desserts, oatmeal is a good source of soluble fiber, niacin, folate and potassium." Black or kidney beans -- Good source of niacin, folate, magnesium, omega-3 fatty acids, calcium, soluble fiber.

Walnuts and almonds -- "Both walnuts and almonds contain omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin E, magnesium, fiber and heart-favorable mono- and polyunsaturated fats."

Blueberries/cranberries/raspberries/strawberries -- "Berries are a good source of beta carotene and lutein, anthocyanin, ellagic acid (a polyphenol), vitamin C, folate, potassium and fiber."

Senegalese official: 2 killed by land mine

ZIGUINCHOR, Senegal (AP) ? A Senegalese official says a woman and her son were killed by a landmine Saturday in the southern Casamance region near the Gambian border.

Cheikh Tidiane Dieng, governor of the southern city of Ziguinchor, said the two were traveling in a cart when it hit a mine. The mother died on the spot, while the child was taken to the Ziguinchor hospital where he died, said Dieng.

Casamance has been plagued by separatist violence for 30 years.

The land mine explosion occurred at a time when the Platform of Women for Peace in Casamance reiterated its call to the Senegalese government to negotiate with the Movement of Democratic Forces of Casamance (MFDC) in Ziguinchor to establish lasting peace in the Casamance region.

Ordeal in the snow: Drivers stranded for hours

Kathy Kmonicek / AP

With tears in her eyes, Pirscilla Arena, 41, from Mount Sinai, N.Y., reads letters she wrote to her two children as she spent the night in her car on North Ocean Avenue in Farmingville after the car got stuck in the snow while she was traveling home after work during the snow storm. Arena was at the Brookhaven Town Hall on Saturday after being rescued by a New York state trooper.

By Frank Eltman, The Associated Press

FARMINGVILLE, N.Y. -- Stranded for hours on a snow-covered road, Priscilla Arena prayed, took out a sheet of loose-leaf paper and wrote what she thought might be her last words to her husband and children.

She told her 9 1/2-year-old daughter, Sophia, she was "picture-perfect beautiful." And she advised her 5 ?-year-old son, John: "Remember all the things that mommy taught you. Never say you hate someone you love. Take pride in the things you do, especially your family. ... Don't get angry at the small things; it's a waste of precious time and energy. Realize that all people are different, but most people are good. "

"My love will never die ? remember, always," she added.

Full coverage from The Weather Channel

Arena, who was rescued in an Army canvas truck after about 12 hours, was one of hundreds of drivers who spent a fearful, chilly night stuck on highways in a blizzard that plastered New York's Long Island with more than 30 inches of snow, its ferocity taking many by surprise despite warnings to stay off the roads.

Even plows were mired in the snow or blocked by stuck cars, so emergency workers had to resort to snowmobiles to try to reach motorists. Four-wheel-drive vehicles, tractor-trailers and a couple of ambulances could be seen stranded along the roadway and ramps of the Long Island Expressway. Stuck drivers peeked out from time to time, running their cars intermittently to warm up as they waited for help.

With many still stranded hours after the snow stopped, Gov. Andrew Cuomo urged other communities to send plows to help dig out in eastern Long Island, which took the state's hardest hit by far in the massive Northeast storm.

In Connecticut, where the storm dumped more than 3 feet of snow in some places, the National Guard rescued about 90 stranded motorists, taking a few to hospitals with hypothermia.

The scenes came almost exactly two years after a blizzard marooned at least 1,500 cars and buses on Chicago's iconic Lake Shore Drive, leaving hundreds of people shivering in their vehicles for as long as 12 hours and questioning why the city didn't close the crucial thoroughfare earlier.

Cuomo and other officials were similarly asked why they didn't act to shut down major highways in Long Island in advance of the storm, especially given the sprawling area's reputation for gridlock. The expressway is often called "the world's longest parking lot."

"The snow just swallowed them up. It came down so hard and so fast," explained Suffolk County Executive Steven Bellone.

"That's not an easy call," added Cuomo, who noted that people wanted to get home and that officials had warned them to take precautions because the worst of the snow could start by the evening rush hour. Flashing highway signs underscored the message ahead of time: "Heavy Snow Expected. Avoid PM Travel!"

"People need to act responsibly in these situations," Cuomo said.

But many workers didn't have the option of taking off early Friday, Arena noted. The 41-year-old sales account manager headed home from an optical supply business in Ronkonkoma around 4 p.m. She soon found her SUV stuck along a road in nearby Farmingville.

"Even though we would dig ourselves out and push forward, the snow kept piling, and therefore we all got stuck, all of us," she recalled later at Brookhaven Town Hall, where several dozen stranded motorists were taken after being rescued. Many others opted to stay with their cars.

Richard Ebbrecht left his Brooklyn chiropractic office around 3 p.m. for his home in Middle Island, about 60 miles away, calculating that he could make the drive home before the worst of the blizzard set in. He was wrong.

As the snow came rushing down faster than he'd foreseen, he got stuck six or seven times on the expressway and on other roads. Drivers began helping each other shovel and push, he said, but to no avail. He finally gave up and spent the night in his car on a local thoroughfare, only about two miles from his home.

"I could run my car and keep the heat on and listen to the radio a little bit," he said.

He walked home around at 8 a.m., leaving his car.

Late-shifters including Wayne Jingo had little choice but to risk it if they wanted to get home. By early afternoon, he'd been stuck in his pickup truck alongside the Long Island Expressway for nearly 12 hours.

He'd left his job around midnight as a postal worker at Kennedy Airport and headed home to Medford, about 50 miles east. He was at an exit in Ronkonkoma ? almost home ? around 1:45 a.m. when another driver came barreling at him westbound, the wrong way, he said. Jingo swerved to avoid the oncoming car, missed the exit and ended up stuck on the highway's grass shoulder.

He rocked the truck back and forth to try to free it, but it only sank down deeper into the snow and shredded one of his tires. He called 911. A police officer came by at 9:30 a.m. and said he would send a tow truck.

At 1 p.m. Saturday, Jingo was still waiting.

"I would have been fine if I didn't have to swerve," he said.

In Middle Island, a Wal-Mart remained unofficially open long past midnight to accommodate more than two dozen motorists who were stranded on nearby roads.

"We're here to mind the store, but we can't let people freeze out there," manager Jerry Greek told Newsday.

Officials weren't aware of any deaths among the stranded drivers, Cuomo said. Suffolk County police said no serious injuries had been reported among stuck motorists, but officers were still systematically checking stranded vehicles late Saturday afternoon.

While the expressway eventually opened Saturday, about 30 miles of the highway was to be closed again Sunday for snow removal.

Susan Cassara left her job at a Middle Island day care center around 6:30 p.m., after driving some of the children home because their parents couldn't get there to pick them up.

She got stuck on one road until about 2:30 a.m. Then a plow helped her get out ? but she got stuck again, she said. Finally, an Army National Guardsman got to her on a snowmobile after 4 a.m.

"It was so cool. Strapped on, held on and came all the way here" to the makeshift shelter at the Brookhaven Town Hall, she said. "Something for my bucket list."

First Person: Blizzard Brings People Together

Yahoo! News is gathering brief first-person accounts, photos and video from the severe winter weather in the northeastern United States. Here's one resident's story.

FIRST PERSON | In Stamford, Conn., the storm of the century was an anticlimactic affair. While other regions of the state report 30-plus inches of snow, Stamford had 12. While reports of injuries and major damage come rolling in, Stamford finds itself buried, but largely OK.

Skidding snowmobiles woke me on what I anticipated to be a lazy morning. Why anyone in this neighborhood -- which boasts about 355 snow-free days per year -- would own a snowmobile, I don't know. These were followed by the plows, which were followed by the occasional car or truck struggling to gain purchase on the still-icy hill.

A quick cup of coffee and I was out the door, gassing up the snow blower and starting to clear the foot of snow blanketing the driveway. The neighbor's kids were doing the same, but with shovels. Feeling sorry for the hapless kids, I brought my machine over to finish their chore.

In the meantime, the new neighbor down the block was surveying his property, shovel in hand. I meandered over to clear a path for his cars. After a brief chat, I headed next door to clear another driveway. The kids from the first house ran over and asked if they could rent the snow blower for $30. I politely declined while making my way to assist another neighbor and his daughter as they dug out their car.

The only snow blower in the neighborhood spared my back the misery of shoveling by hand, and gave me reason to say hello to my neighbors.

We know we were smart to prepare, even though it ultimately proved unnecessary. We know we were fortunate to avoid damage and injury. We bid Nemo farewell as it travels further north; and we sip hot chocolate before getting on with our day, thankful to be a little closer to our neighbors than before.

The Joy of Fungal Sex: Penicillin Mold Can Reproduce Sexually, Which Could Lead to Better Antibiotics

Penicillin-producing fungus, previously thought to be asexual, has a sexual side. The finding is the latest in a kind of sexual revolution in fungal genetics

MOLDY Blue-green fungi growing on bread is often Penicillium Image: by Henry M?hlpfordt via Wikimedia Commons

By turning off the lights, setting up an oatmeal-based bed and slipping some extra vitamins into their food, researchers have persuaded the supposedly asexual mold that makes penicillin to have sex. The fungi's ability to switch it up sexually could help industrial scientists breed more efficient antibiotic-producing strains or even lead to the discovery of new, useful compounds.

Penicillium chrysogenum is the original and still-used source of penicillin. It creates a nitrogen and carbon ring structure called beta-lactam, which prevents bacteria from building cell walls. This antibiotic helps the microscopic fungi kill any bacteria that might try to live where the fungi grows; it is also what doctors have used to combat bacterial illness since the 1940s.

Despite decades of study, researchers still believed that the fungi only reproduced asexually. That misunderstanding limited how scientists could genetically manipulate the fungi for industrial antibiotic production. The idea that P. chrysogenum was asexual persisted because fungal sex is complicated. Fungi?a group that includes large mushrooms growing on the forest floor and microscopic molds colonizing stale bread?have many different strategies for reproducing: Some clone themselves asexually. Others navigate a mating scene populated not by one member of a different sex but thousands of sexes. Some yeast can switch gender completely. The number of sexes in the fungal world depends on the species.

Paul Dyer, a fungal biologist at the University of Nottingham in England, suspected that P. chrysogenum would reproduce sexually if given the right encouragement. A complete sequencing of the fungi's genome revealed that P. chyrosogenum still carried the genes needed for mating. "That told us that there was perhaps sexual compatibility there," he says. So Dyer and researchers at several other European institutions tried to find the ideal conditions that would encourage P.chrysogenum to have sex.

First, Dyer and his colleagues paired strains with compatible mating genes (P. chyrosogenum has two different sexes) and grew them with different food and light conditions. The winning combination was an oatmeal-base supplemented with a vitamin called biotin. After five weeks in the dark, the fungi produced special structures called cleistothecia and ascospores, which only occur after sexual reproduction. Genetic analysis confirmed that genes had been sexually recombined. "We've now revealed its secret sexual side," Dyer says.

Furthermore, the researchers discovered that the genes that regulate the fungi's sexual ability also control the amount of penicillin it produces; the fungi that are having sex make more penicillin. The team published their findings online in January in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. "I've believed for a long time that these guys were having sex but they were just doing it in secret," says Joan W. Bennett, a professor of plant biology and pathology at Rutgers University, who was not involved in the work.

P. chrysogenum isn't the only previously asexual fungi recently reclassified as a reluctant sexual reproducer. Dyer's lab group has also discovered that Aspergillus fumigatus, a mold commonly found in compost heaps and leaf litter, can also reproduce sexually.

The fact that sex in fungi is more widespread than many scientists had thought is one reason to get excited about the findings, says Bennett, but there are also practical reasons.

Just as humans have bred cows to produce more milk than their wild cousins; sexually reproducing P. chrysogenum could be bred to produce more penicillin. Industrial strains with high antibiotic concentrations are already in use, says study co-author and Ulrich K?ck, a professor of molecular botany at Ruhr University Bochum in Germany. Those strains, however, are "very genetically unstable," he explains, and penicillin production tends to decrease as the fungal culture ages. "In industry you have to improve your strains every month or every week," he says. "Crossing a high-producing strain with a healthy partner strain would be very valuable."

Critical Flash fix out for Windows, Mac, Android

Adobe wants Windows, Mac and Linux users to install a critical security update, issued Thursday, for Adobe's Flash Player. Without it, the company says, there are vulnerabilities in the program that could "cause a crash and potentially allow an attacker to take control" of the computer.

The fix is also urged for phone and tablet users of the Android operating system versions 4.x, 3.x and 2.x. (That accounts for nearly every Android phone currently in use.)

Adobe said last year that Flash wouldn't be coming to Android 4.1 or later. As NBCNews.com's Devin Coldewey wrote then, "Many websites still use Flash for media delivery or navigation, and have yet to update to HTML5 and other, more future-oriented, standards."

The patch for computers is available here; Android users are instructed to check their Flash version by going to Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > Adobe Flash Player x.x. The latest Flash version for Android 4.0 is 11.1.115.36; and for Android 2.x and 3.x is 11.1.111.31.

One of the Flash attacks "is targeting aerospace and other manufacturing companies, and is being delivered via infected Microsoft Office documents," Michael Mimoso, of Kaspersky Lab, wrote on the company's Threatpost blog Friday.

Those attacks use spear-phishing emails ? essentially booby-trapped emails designed to infect a user's computer of phone ? to "trick victims into opening Word file attachments that are carrying an embedded .SWF Flash Player file," Mimoso wrote.

"The SWF files used in the exploit work only against certain versions of Flash and operating systems; they also reference a character in the video game 'Dishonored' called Lady Boyle in the name of the action script embedded in the SWF file."

Jaime Blasco, of AlienVault Labs, wrote on that company's blog that one of the files was using the 2013 IEEE Aerospace Conference schedule "as a lure to trick the user into opening the file."

Web-based attacks playing to the Flash vunerability, in contrast, are mainly "drive-by downloads where attackers lure victims to a website hosting the malicious Flash file," Mimoso wrote. "Adobe said the attacks are limited to Firefox or Safari, and can also be delivered via Word document attachments."

If you have questions about Flash, Adobe's online community forum is one resource to find more answers. If you're not sure which version of Flash you're running or need to run, you can visit this Adobe page to check.
