Beaujolais Nouveau Day is celebrated on the third Thursday of every November. That will be November 15, for 2012. (It was formerly observed on November 15 annually, before savvy marketers likely realized Thursdays are a better day to introduce weekend frivolity.)
Though serious oenophiles (or ?wine snobs?) mock it as an entirely manufactured marketing phenomenon, and others suggest its light, fruity, ?fresh? (only weeks in the making), almost-white-wine style is perfect for Americans ? it? isn?t really Fall for some until ?Le Beaujolais Nouveau est arriv?!?
Beaujolais Nouveau is a red wine made with the Gamay grape in the French region of Beaujolais. It?s inexpensive, best served with a little chill, and pairs appropriately with typical holiday fare (turkey, etc), but would have a tough time standing up to a big tenderloin or any complex red meat menu.
Lexington celebrations of Beaujolais Nouveau:
Steve Mancuso, director of the Wine Guild at the Holly Hill Inn, will be at Windy Corner Market on Saturday, November 17 to pour the 2012 Nouveau, from 3-5 p.m. Stop in any time to try a glass or bottle. No reservations needed. $5/glass or $18/bottle.
