Stacie King will present the results of recent archaeological research in the mountains of southern Oaxaca, Mexico, where she has been investigating how indigenous peoples engaged and interacted with the Zapotec, Aztec, and Spanish conquest empires. Since 2007, she has conducted archaeological survey and excavations aimed at locating evidence for encounters between migrant, militaries, and local peoples. A study of early Colonial documents in Mexican archives and oral history interviews with local residents add important dimensions that complicate the story that we get from archaeology. She'll also discuss the merits and challenges of bringing together archaeology, documentary and oral histories as she works to uncover Oaxaca's forgotten history. King is an Associate Professor in the Anthropology Department at Indiana University.
