Apple on Monday announced that it has sold more than 5 million units of the iPhone 5 over the weekend. The number is extremely impressive and sets a new record for opening-weekend sales for the technology giant.
?Demand for iPhone 5 has been incredible and we are working hard to get an iPhone 5 into the hands of every customer who wants one as quickly as possible,? said Tim Cook, Apple?s CEO. ?While we have sold out of our initial supply, stores continue to receive iPhone 5 shipments regularly and customers can continue to order online and receive an estimated delivery date. We appreciate everyone?s patience and are working hard to build enough iPhone 5s for everyone.?
As a brief refresher, Apple's all-new smartphone sports a dual-core A6 processor and 1GB of RAM. The handset is powered by iOS 6 and features an all-new, better iSight shooter. Overall, the iPhone 5 is a worthy update to its predecessor, the iPhone 4S.
The 5 million sold is great news for Apple, though hardly a surprise as sales of the iPhone 4S hit 4 million in its first weekend of availability last year. So far, demand for iPhone 5 has exceeded the initial supply and while the majority of pre-orders have been shipped to customers, many are scheduled to be shipped in October.
The 5 million sold also confirms, to me at least, that Apple is still the leader in the smartphone space. Sure, Samsung and Android might have more market share, but no company can garner the type excitement Apple can. Few companies can generate the massive amount of profit that Apple can either.
Apple also announced? Monday that it will begin selling the iPhone 5 in Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, and several other countries starting next week, so expect demand for Apple's premier smartphone to snowball.
